Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has grown increasingly more engaged with the campaigns of fellow Republicans leading up to the midterms but his latest endorsement had former President Donald Trump shouting, “A BIG MISTAKE!”
Having previously campaigned in hotly contested states like Arizona and Pennsylvania where Trump had backed Senate candidates Blake Masters and Dr. Mehmet Oz respectively, DeSantis veered away from the president’s circle of influence Sunday with the release of a robocall in the state of Colorado. In the recording, the governor can be heard asking Coloradans to show their support for contractor and Republican senatorial candidate Joe O’Dea.
“Hello this is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. America needs strong leadership and desperately. That’s why I’m endorsing Joe O’Dea for U.S. Senate. Colorado, please vote for Joe O’Dea,” DeSantis said.
Governor DeSantis is a fighter — a true leader — who has brought progress and prosperity to Florida. I’m honored to have his support.

“I’ve watched Joe from a distance, and I’m impressed,” the governor went on. However, writing on Truth Social, Trump saw the endorsement differently and linked to a story from the Washington Examiner when he wrote, “A BIG MISTAKE!”
While the president didn’t elaborate on whether the mistake was anyone showing support for O’Dea or DeSantis seemingly posturing against Trump who had deemed the candidate a RINO, the disfavor for the hopeful Coloradan was clear when he previously posted, “There’s this RINO character in the Great State of Colorado, Joe O’Dea, that is running against the incumbent Democrat for the United States Senate, who is having a good old time saying that he wants to ‘distance’ himself from President Trump, and other slightly nasty things. He should look at the Economy, Inflation, Energy Independence, defeating ISIS, the Strongest EVER Border, Great Trade Deals, & much more, before he speaks. MAGA doesn’t Vote for stupid people with big mouths. Good luck Joe!”
Trump’s post followed an appearance by O’Dea on CNN’s “State of the Union” where he told host Dana Bash, “I’m going to actively campaign against Donald Trump and make sure that we’ve got four or five really great Republicans right now,” and, “I don’t think Donald Trump should run again.”
With control of the Senate critical to halting President Joe Biden from furthering the progressive agenda in the remaining two years before the 2024 presidential election, and with O’Dea facing an uphill battle in the once purple state that has turned increasingly blue, DeSantis talked up positive aspects of the candidate’s campaign rather than just embracing the notion that any Republican would be better than any Democrat.
“This guy is not a career politician. He’s a contractor. He’s built a company from nothing,” his robocall recording said. “He’s a leader who knows how to fight and get results. Michael Bennet votes with Joe Biden 98 percent of the time. The results have been a disaster for the American people. Colorado needs new leadership.”
The main divide from O’Dea and the conservative base, outside of his deference to Trump, was seen in his view on the overturning of Roe v. Wade. However, his softer stance on abortion falls in line for the state where Democratic Gov. Jared Polis signed a law allowing the practice up to birth.
“Joe’s focused on building the wall and cracking down on crime. He’ll stand-up to the big spending politicians in both parties and cut red tape,” DeSantis continued. “Vote Joe O’Dea and let’s turn Colorado red!”
