Elon Musk disputes claim Putin told him he would use nukes to defend annexed regions of Ukraine

In a he-said-he-said with global implications, a political scientist alleged Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about his willingness to use nuclear weapons ahead of the billionaire’s panned peace plan and the businessman fired back with a claim of his own: “Nobody should trust Bremmer.”

For nearly eight months the Russian invasion of Ukraine has carried on at great cost to the United States and the world through direct infusions of resources and via the disruption of supply chains. Musk’s attempt to dispassionately survey the most likely outcome and accelerate the process to get there was treated as pro-Putin propaganda, and political scientist Ian Bremmer charged that there was more the billionaire hadn’t revealed.

“elon musk told me he had spoken with putin and the kremlin directly about ukraine. he also told me what the kremlin’s red lines were,” he tweeted after releasing his Eurasia Group newsletter that said much the same.

The political scientist went on to state, “i have been writing my weekly newsletter on geopolitics for 24 yrs. i write honestly without fear or favor and this week’s update was no different. i’ve long admired musk as a unique and world-changing entrepreneur, which I’ve said publicly. he’s not a geopolitics expert.”

Musk responded through his preferred medium of a tweet and succinctly denied the claim, “Nobody should trust Bremmer.”

This came after Vice had written a piece on Bremmer’s allegations which led financial strategist Sven Henrich to reach out publicly to the billionaire and ask, “Is this true?”

“No, it is not,” Musk replied. “I have spoken to Putin only once and that was about 18 months ago. The subject matter was space.”

Bremmer had further claimed that the alleged conversation involved Putin’s assertion that he was “prepared to negotiate” with the qualifier that the deal would involve Ukraine’s recognition of Russia’s annexation of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia which, if not satisfied could lead to his deployment of nuclear weapons to fulfill his objective.

The conversation was reportedly similar to the poll for “Ukraine-Russia Peace: that Musk had posted online drawing ire from many including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who countered with his own poll asking “Which [Elon Musk] do you like more? One who supports Ukraine” or “One who supports Russia.”

Ukraine’s former ambassador to Germany Andreina Melnyk was less passive-aggressive as he directly replied to Musk’s poll, “F*ck off is my very diplomatic reply to you [Elon Musk].”

Were Bremmer’s claims found to be true, Muck could potentially be in violation of the Logan Act which sets forth in part, “Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”

The billionaire has remained adamant that he holds a pro-Ukraine stance and that he is sincerely concerned about the threat of nuclear war posed by the ongoing crisis. In a possible follow-up to the coverage of his efforts at striking a peace deal, Musk posted a meme taking a shot at the bias of pundits and outlets calling out “half truths,” “anonymous sources,” “lies of omission” and other sorts of “unbalanced coverage” with him set apart, “tryin to escape mainstream media.”
