Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber told Fox News that a zero-tolerance policy that implements the immediate deportation of illegal immigrants with no exceptions would curb the crisis at the southern border.

The Texas border sheriff is fed up with the Biden administration and the refusal of the president and Vice President Kamala Harris to even visit the border or give him the courtesy of a phone call over the dire situation his deputies and residents are facing every day.
“People don’t feel safe because they see these immigrant groups coming in and see those groups in their areas in their community,” Schmerber told Fox News. “It’s like there’s no control, borders are open. Catch them and deport them right away, and it’d stop the problem.”
Maverick County is part of the dangerous Del Rio sector of the border. It has seen almost half a million migrants crossing since October 2021, according to Customs and Border Protection. Many die as they try to cross over.
In response to the violent inundation of the area, residents are stockpiling weapons and ammo at their homes and businesses. Shops close early because the threat of crime rises dramatically after darkness falls. Migrants are even killing their dogs, according to Fox News.

“The majority want to be caught,” Schmerber claimed in regard to illegal migrants coming into Eagle Pass. “They’re hoping that the Border Patrol agents or somebody would apprehend them so they can take them through there to the processing centers.”
“They’re taking advantage,” he asserted. “They’re using us. So the solution to me would be … zero tolerance.”
The sheriff noted that when Gov. Greg Abbott sent the Texas National Guard and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers to the area, the effect was immediate.
“The troopers are helping 100 percent,” he remarked.
The presence of Texas National Guard troops along the Texas-Mexico border is crucial to protecting private property & securing our border.

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department is tasked with surveilling and patroling 74 miles of the Rio Grande. Schmerber pointed out that the Border Patrol is also in charge of part of the area but is so busy handling illegal immigrants at migrant processing centers they don’t have time to handle the actual crossings and apprehensions.
The sheriff also charged that if deputies weren’t so tied up handling illegal border crossings, they would be more able to combat crime which is rampant in the area.
“It’s taking time from us to just do our main job, which is supposed to be just the law enforcement on criminals,” Schmerber told Fox News in the interview.
322,531 single adults from over 118 countries have been apprehended in the Del Rio Sector this year.

The police frequently receive calls from residents that cattle have escaped because illegal immigrants are cutting through ranchers’ fences.
“Ranchers were not very happy because their cattle were going onto the highway,” the sheriff commented. “It’s a liability, you know.”
That doesn’t include burglaries, trespassing, and at times, more serious crimes such as murder, rape, drug running, and human trafficking.

Almost 40 percent of Texas voters said that the border and illegal immigration are the number one issue facing the state, according to a Wednesday Quinnipiac University poll. Less than 20 percent saw abortion as the most important issue. Even inflation takes a back seat to the border issue.
“I don’t think the federal government is helping anybody here,” Schmerber charged. “Maybe the vice president, president will come over here so that people will know that they are aware of what’s going on.”
