The “Duck Sauce Killer” Glenn Hirsch, who allegedly killed a Chinese delivery man over a long-running feud about condiments, has reportedly committed suicide ahead of a court hearing while out on $500,000 bail.

Hirsch, 51, was out on bail after he was charged with the murder of Zhiwen Yan. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday but instead, he reportedly shot himself just hours before the hearing. He was subsequently found by police officers after missing his court appearance.
He was reportedly found on his couch that was covered in plastic, wearing rubber gloves and holding the gun while a radio blared music, according to the New York Post.
Hirsch had gotten into disputes with the Chinese restaurant before. He was charged with shooting Yan and fleeing the scene on April 30.
The restaurant’s owner, Ken Yang, accused Hirsch of repeatedly harassing him and his workers, claiming he vandalized his car and showed up at the eatery with a gun in January.
Yan was a father of three. He was shot in the chest while delivering for a Chinese restaurant on his scooter in Forest Hills.
Hours before Yan was shot to death, police said surveillance footage captured Hirsch circling the Great Wall restaurant in his car, then tailing the delivery man to his next food drop.
Michael Horn, Hirsch’s attorney, announced that the case was officially closed and had been “abated by death.”
“The officers went to Mr. Hirsch’s apartment this morning and found him deceased, apparently through a gunshot wound – self-inflicted,” he said in a statement.
“It seems to be suicide, there was a note in which he expressed that he wasn’t guilty, that the process was not treating him fairly,” Horn recounted. “But that is obviously the thoughts of a person who was anxious, depressed, and refused to seek counseling.”

Before taking his life, Hirsch emailed a typewritten suicide note that was several pages long to his lawyers, prosecutors, and those involved in the case. The lengthy note was also found in his apartment at his feet by police.
He reportedly anticipated and feared that he would be returned to prison over weapons charges and wrote that he didn’t want to sit in a cell for years or fight the charges behind bars.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz remarked in a statement, “The loss of a human life is always tragic. Obviously, we would have preferred to try Mr. Glenn Hirsch for the calculated murder of Mr. Zhiwen Yan in a court of law, but this is no longer an option. We once again express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Zhiwen Yan, who continue to grieve his tragic and senseless loss.”
Police believe that Hirsch was driving an older model of a Lexus RX3 SV when he stopped at a traffic light and exchanged words with Yan before shooting him near 108th Street and 67th Drive.
The man evidently had issues over condiments. When police searched his Briarwood home, they discovered the refrigerator packed with sweet and sour duck sauce.
Now that’s takeout

“His whole refrigerator was filled with duck sauce,” a police source commented to the New York Daily News. “And other condiments.”
“He’s a hoarder. And when you open the refrigerator, it’s like, condiments – there’s duck sauce, soy sauce, ketchup,” the source added. “I guess in some pathology people like that take that stuff very seriously – you didn’t give him enough duck sauce.”
