U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) may have drawn a walk before flipping the bird in the direction of the Republican dugout at the Congressional Baseball Game Thursday night, but her efforts to explain away her unsportsmanlike conduct have been swings and misses.
Started in 1909, the Congressional Baseball Game has been an annual event, with some exceptions, where members of Congress take part in a friendly competition to raise money for charity. With a final score of 10-0, this year’s event saw the GOP trounce the Democrats and before the shutout was complete, Sanchez seemed to share her displeasure with her colleagues from across the aisle.
As previously reported, the California lawmaker earned a walk to kick off the bottom of the sixth inning and after getting pulled for a pinch runner, Sanchez appeared to present her middle finger toward the Republicans only to now claim to NBC News’ Frank Thorp, “It wasn’t the team. It was an obnoxious fan who shouts misogynistic sh*t at me every single year.”

When asked by Thorp what it was this unnamed fan supposedly said that bristled her so, the congresswoman replied, “I’m not going to dignify it with a response because it’s nasty and it’s crude, and it has no place at a charity baseball game.”
So, an anonymous fan’s alleged remark had “no place at a charity baseball game,” but there was no indication that Sanchez apologized for her own obscene gesture. After all, it was former attorney general Eric Holder who said, “When they go low, we kick them.”

Sanchez certainly kicked as she pivoted off her supposed victimhood to slander the women of the Republican team alleging inaction to a statement only she heard. “If the Republican women would have stood up and said that’s not acceptable instead of, you know, trashing me for my response then we might have a place where there’s no misogyny that’s tolerated by anybody anywhere.”

However, the reality is, this is Sanchez’ second go-round at offering up an excuse. Her original explanation for her behavior was open for interpretation and suggested that it may have been one of the Republicans who had fired off the so-called “offensive and misogynistic comment.”
“The Congressional Baseball Game is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s a great cause and brings both sides of the aisle together for a night off from partisan politics,” she claimed despite continually harping on partisanship. “That is why it really struck a nerve when I heard an offensive and misogynistic comment from the Republican side on my way back to the dugout.”

“In the heat of the moment, I reacted,” she had gone on. “I have no tolerance for men who make women feel like they are unimportant or don’t belong — especially on the field. I will always stand against that kind of bigotry.”
In support of Republicans being unaware of Sanchez’ claims, a staffer for U.S. Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX) told OutKick, “The Congressman did not hear the comment, nor did he see Rep. Sanchez give the middle finger. He only found out about it later.”
