During an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, who claims to be a truth-seeker, self-righteously brushed off the lack of due process in the partisan January 6 committee and cited two other Rupert Murdoch-owned outlets that have condemned ex-President Donald Trump.
Murdoch is the executive chairman of News Corporation which also owns Fox News.
Anchor Bret Baier began that portion of the segment by asking Cheney (R-Wyo.) how she counters critics who have described the J6 proceedings as a show trial with an unfair format that pushes a one-sided narrative.
In the video clip embedded above, he provided a litany of reasons for the skepticism, including that the panel may not have been legally constituted.
“They list these things: they say it’s produced by television professionals who clearly lean left; it airs in prime time. There’s no opportunity for the target to defend or put forth a defense. There’s no cross-examination of witnesses, a duty deeply ingrained, they say, in American notions of due process. They say House rules require an aiming for a ranking member to be put forward by the minority. They have a problem with the fact that you are that ‘ranking member’ even though you were selected by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. So how do you respond to the criticism?”

Baier could also have mentioned selectively or misleadingly edited evidence or how Cheney and her colleagues are reading their anti-Trump rants off of a teleprompter.
Without directly answering any of Baier’s pertinent questions, Cheney shifted blame to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif).
“Once the bipartisan outside commission was defeated, the only alternative left to us was this committee. And after Kevin McCarthy named his members to the committee and Speaker Pelosi rejected two of them, Jim Jordan and Jim Banks, for good reason. I supported her decision to do that. Kevin McCarthy withdrew all of his other nominees, and so the notion now that somehow the committee is incapable of getting to the facts of what happened because Kevin McCarthy withdrew his nominees is nonsensical. It also is a diversion,” a dour Cheney replied about the grouping that Trump has deemed the “Unselect” committee.
Cheney added that the committee has heard testimony from mostly Republican witnesses, which is relatively meaningless in transactional go-along-to-get-along D.C.
Baier then injected that cross-examination is a fundamental part of any committee hearing. According to Cheney, cross-examination would not have changed anything, which is quite a claim from someone who received her law degree from the University of Chicago.
She then returned to the McCarthy blame game.

“It would be a dereliction of our duty to be in a position where, because Kevin McCarthy decided to withdraw nominees, and he decided to do that, I’m quite confident, because Donald Trump told him to, because Kevin McCarthy decided not to participate in the committee, that somehow the House of Representatives cannot investigate the single worst attack the United States capital since the War of 1812,” she declared.
Cheney then asserted that “the facts are indisputable that while the Capitol was being attacked by a mob sent by Donald Trump, armed, Donald Trump would not tell them to go home for over 187 minutes. That is a dereliction of duty like we have never seen before.”
The congresswoman failed to mention that Trump specifically advised his supporters to protest peacefully and patriotically at the Capitol.
Baier then pivoted to the August 16 Wyoming GOP primary, pointing out that polls suggest that Cheney is 20 points behind Trump-backed challenger Harriet Hageman. “If you lose, do you see that as an indictment on your battle against Trump?” Baier wondered.
In a self-serving response, Cheney insisted, “I am working hard to earn every single vote, but I will tell you, Bret, that given the choice between maintaining my seat in the House of Representatives on the one hand, or ensuring the survival of our constitutional republic and ensuring the American people know the truth about Donald Trump, I will choose the Constitution and the truth every day of the week and twice on Sunday.”
Apart from the Never Trump contingent, with his outsized personality, Trump obviously rubs some people, including elected officials in his own party, the wrong way at times. But it’s quite another thing for Cheney to become a pawn of Pelosi and the Democrats perhaps because she is an advocate of nation-building overseas which often results in endless war, and Trump is America First.
Baier then cited a delusional AP article that implied that Cheney is positioning herself as a 2024 presidential candidate. Cheney dodged any discussion of future political aspirations, but then played the Murdoch card.
“And look, it’s not just me that is saying that Donald Trump is unfit for office. It’s other entities owned by Rupert Murdoch. It’s the New York Post and their editorial on Friday. It’s the Wall Street Journal — said the same thing after our hearing on Thursday night. So I’m gonna continue to be guided by making sure I do my duty and making sure the American people understand the truth,” Cheney asserted.
In the aforementioned editorial, the generally conservative New York Post argued, in part:
As his followers stormed the Capitol, calling for his vice president to be hanged, President Donald Trump sat in his private dining room, watching TV, doing nothing. For three hours, seven minutes…
His only focus was to find any means — damn the consequences — to block the peaceful transfer of power.
There is no other explanation, just as there is no defense, for his refusal to stop the violence.
It’s up to the Justice Department to decide if this is a crime. But as a matter of principle, as a matter of character, Trump has proven himself unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again.
