Rep. Zeldin says Trump’s call to protest ‘peacefully and patriotically’ absent from Dem impeachment video

Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin slammed Democrat impeachment managers on the first day of former President Trump’s second impeachment trial, claiming they deceptively edited a video highlighting the events during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Zeldin gave an interview to Newsmax that Donald Trump Jr. tweeted out. In it, Zeldin decried the manipulated video: “If they’re going to start playing the video of what the president said, how do you cut it out at the point where the president’s telling his supporters to [protest] peacefully and patriotically?”

Lead impeachment manager Jamie Raskin (D-MD) implored his fellow lawmakers to take into consideration the consequences of not finding Trump guilty for what occurred on Jan. 6.

“If we buy this radical argument that Trump’s lawyers advance, we risk allowing January 6 to become our future,” he warned. “What will the January exception mean to future generations if you grant it? I’ll show you.”

In the 13-minute montage introduced by Raskin, clips were played of Trump’s speech as well as visually jarring footage of rioters storming the Capitol and fighting with police. But the portion of the speech where Trump encouraged his supporters to protest “peacefully and patriotically” was edited out. The video presented at the impeachment trial was allegedly meant to convince lawmakers that Trump incited a riot and encouraged violence despite what he actually said.

Right Side Broadcasting Network and others initially spotted the selective editing and called it out. Even left-leaning Newsweek fact-checked the claim and found it was ‘true’ that the video had been deceptively edited.

“According to a transcript of the speech and footage of it in its entirety, Trump did make the statement on January 6,” Newsweek reported. “The video played at Trump’s trial Tuesday showed the violence that occurred at the Capitol but does not include that part of his speech.”

“The montage presented by [lead impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.)] shows the tens of thousands of Trump supporters at the Ellipse as he echoed unsubstantiated claims of a stolen election. It then cuts to rioters marching to and storming the Capitol before the conclusion of the speech, then returns to a later portion of Trump’s remarks,” Newsweek stated.

Former Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz claimed that the edited footage possibly violated a rule that prohibits videos from being “manipulated with the intent to mislead the public.”

“Go to page 34 of House Rules. Did the manipulated video violate the House Rules?” Chaffetz asked in a tweet.

The rule reads as follows:

“The Committee on Ethics is directed to report to the House, not later than December 31, 2021, any recommended amendments to the Code of Official Conduct, as well as any accompanying regulations, intended to address the circumstances and instances, if any, for which a Member, Delegate, Resident Commissioner, officer, or employee of the House may be subject to discipline for the dissemination by electronic means, including by social media, of any image, video, or audio file that has been distorted or manipulated with the intent to mislead the public.”

“Listening to the impeachment trial. Amazing how deceptive the editing is from the very beginning,” wrote Will Chamberlain, who is a lawyer and co-publisher for Human Events. “Raskin’s video includes President Trump saying ‘we are going to walk down to the Capitol’ while omitting his request for his supporters to ‘peacefully make their voices heard.'”
