White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took part in a weak joke at former President Donald Trump’s expense Friday that only further emphasized President Joe Biden’s failures since taking office.
While giving an update on Biden’s condition, since it was announced that the president had tested positive for COVID, the press secretary attempted to use the opportunity to brag about how well-controlled the pandemic became under his leadership. However, those claims were overshadowed by a reporter who dredged up a more than two-year-old story pertaining to Trump, the virus, and bleach.
“I want to reiterate this,” Jean-Pierre said during the White House press briefing, “the president is improving. He has very mild symptoms of a virus. And we should be thrilled that the president of the United States is doing better. And again-”
“Without injecting bleach?” a reporter interrupted earning a mild chuckle from the press secretary.
“That’s the wrong administration,” she replied. “You’re asking the wrong administration that question. But again, we have the tools, and that’s why we are able to give him the treatment.”
The reference harkened back to the early days of the pandemic when, in April 2020, after bringing up the use of ultraviolet light against the virus, Trump had said, “And then, I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds — it sounds interesting to me.”
At the time, radio host Mark Levin had lambasted the media for twisting Trump’s statement to suggest it was anything beyond exploring cutting-edge medical procedures to combat the virus, laying in to the “crazy a** media” for claiming “the president recommended that we drink disinfectant.”

Even then-candidate Biden had joined in on the denigration of Trump when he tweeted, “I can’t believe I have to say this, but please don’t drink bleach.”

Meanwhile, Biden had also belittled the use of well-established medicines like hydroxychloroquine despite its presence on the World Health Organizations’ list of essential medicines. In fact, Biden had compared it to the disinfectant story and said, “It’s like saying maybe if you inject Clorox into your blood, it may cure you.”
Jean-Pierre’s effort to participate in further ridicule of Trump only highlighted how little Biden has actually done to combat COVID as her claims about the administration having “the tools” ignored how ineffective those tools are. Biden has received the recommended number of doses of the vaccine and still caught the virus. Since that time, he has been provided a course of Paxlovid, which has demonstrated itself to be an ineffective remedy and actually has caused a rebound of the virus in patients with worse symptoms, as recently occurred to Dr. Anthony Fauci.
