Seven retired generals and admirals have written an op-ed in The New York Times asserting that former President Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 were tantamount to a “dereliction of duty.”
They further asserted in the New York Times piece Thursday that Trump endangered American democracy with his actions that day.
“When a mob attacked the Capitol, the commander in chief failed to act to restore order and even encouraged the rioters,” the former military leaders, who served Democratic and Republican presidents, falsely claimed.
Retired four-star Generals Peter Chiarelli, John Jumper, and Johnnie Wilson, and retired Admirals James Loy, John Nathman, William Owens, and Steve Abbot all attacked Trump, claiming that he didn’t take action on Jan. 6 to stop the riot. They also pointed fingers at him alleging that he considered using the military in an attempt to seize power.

The former military leaders wrote that Trump’s allies “urged him to hold on to power by unlawfully ordering the military to seize voting machines and supervise a do-over of the election.”
They also contended that when the former president did not call out the National Guard in response to the storming of the Capitol, he ignored an “urgent need” for his intervention.
“The president and commander in chief, Donald Trump, abdicated his duty to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution,” they charged. And in doing so, he “tested the integrity” of civilian control of the military “as never before, endangering American lives and our democracy.”

The generals and admirals urged military leaders to enhance their training concerning the chain of command and the civilian-military leadership balance. They also begged that training include “the commander in chief.”
“The lesson of that day is clear. Our democracy is not a given. To preserve it, Americans must demand nothing less from their leaders than an unassailable commitment to country over party — and to their oaths above all,” the retired military officials declared.

Chiarelli was vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army under former President Obama. Nathman was head of U.S. Fleet Forces Command under Bush and worked with Obama on his 2008 campaign. He has spoken out against Trump previously, according to CBS News.
Jumper served as the chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, Loy served as deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security under former President George W. Bush, and Abbot served as the acting homeland security adviser, also under Bush.
Wilson was the commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, and Owens was vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under former President Clinton.
The attack was reminiscent of the one where more than 50 former senior intelligence officials, including James Clapper and John Brennan, signed a letter claiming that the Hunter Biden laptop story had all the earmarks of a Russian disinformation campaign.

It also brought to mind when 31 former chiefs of staff to Democratic senators called for the repeal of the filibuster.
The left has dredged up numerous former officials and military leaders to make assertions in the public eye. This attack on Trump is just the latest in a long string of them.
