Since the disastrous response to the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas that resulted in the deaths of 19 children and two teachers, the release of information in the search for accountability has been handled just as poorly and the latest discovery had some slamming the media as “chickensh*t.”
Multiple investigations have been underway since the 18-year-old suspect entered Robb Elementary School and devastated the community with an act of pure evil. As a part of those investigations, video from the hallways of the school had been obtained and released by the media before families were given the opportunity to see for themselves as had been planned.
As reported, the video shows officers standing idly by and even applying hand sanitizer during the 77 minutes that elapsed before they finally entered the classroom where the suspect had been in. Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin slammed the Austin-American Statesmen and its affiliate KVUE TV Tuesday during a city council meeting for releasing the footage.
“The way that video was released today is one of the most chicken things I’ve ever seen,” he said. “Yes, I’ve wanted the video released but all these news agencies knew that we were working with the House committee.”
McLaughlin outlined that the plan had been for parents to have a private viewing of the video on Sunday prior to the press having an opportunity to ask questions and that it would be edited to remove graphic content. “There was no reason for those family to have to see that. They were going to see the video but they didn’t need to see the gunman coming in and hear the gunshots. They don’t need to relive that,” he stated. “They’ve been through enough. And that was the most chicken way to put this video out today.”
“Every news agency knew that we were talking to the House. The House went to the Austin-American Statesman and KVUE TV and told them that this was going to happen. The response was: ‘Well, we all have a job to do,'” he railed.
City Councilman Ernest W. “Chip” King III followed up McLaughlin by saying, “The mayor said ‘chicken,’ it was chickensh*t,” and that “they did that for ratings and they did that for money.”
“What about the cops?” an attendee shouted out. “Are they chickensh*t?”
“We’re gonna handle that,” King replied.
Residents had been further outraged when they learned that the makeshift memorial to the victims was removed on July 8. KSAT’s Leigh Waldman tweeted that residents have referred to the removal as “another ‘F*****g cover up'” and that claims the mayor asked them to collect items from the site was a lie.”

A permanent memorial is said to be in the works, according to the Daily Mail, but the miscommunication was just another in a long list of failures to the people of Uvalde.
McLaughlin went on to try and assure the gathering that “No one will be exempt” after suggesting “Every agency that was in that hallway has to be accountable for their actions that day.”
