With investigations underway relating to the tragic shooting at a Fourth of July Parade outside Chicago Monday, reports on the suspect’s history have only shifted concerns to what law enforcement is actually doing to intercede in the name of public safety.
The 21-year-old suspect, Robert Crimo III, currently faces seven first-degree murder charges after he reportedly opened fire from a rooftop at the Highland Park, Illinois Fourth of July parade, wounding dozens more. While Democrats rekindle calls to ban as many firearms as they can for law-abiding citizens, more serious questions surround how the suspect was able to obtain his rifle with authorities deeming him a “clear and present danger.”
The Illinois State Police (ISP) issued a press release Tuesday that sought to clarify the matter surrounding the suspect’s ability to obtain a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card, a requirement to purchase a firearm in Illinois as reported by Fox News. Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s (D-Ill.) press secretary Jordan Abudayyeh shared that release on social media.

“In September 2019, ISP received a Clear and Present Danger report on the subject from the Highland Park Police Department. The report was related to threats the subject made against his family,” the report began.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli explained in a press conference Tuesday that the suspect had two interactions with authorities in 2019 that included a suicide attempt in April, where mental health officials became involved, and the September threat to his family.
Highland Park police says they had two prior encounters with the shooter:

“A family member reported that Crimo said he was going to kill everyone and Crimo had a collection of knives. The police responded to his residence,” Covelli stated. “The police removed 16 knives, a dagger and a sword from Crimo’s home. At that time there was no probable cause to arrest – there were no complaints that were signed by any of the victims. The Highland Park Police Department did immediately notify the Illinois State Police of the incident.”
They further added that the weapons that had been removed were said to have belonged to the suspect’s father, and they were returned to him the same day.
“At that time…the subject did not have a FOID card to revoke or a pending FOID application to deny,” the ISP report continued. “Once this determination was made, Illinois State Police involvement with the matter was concluded.” Additionally, “no mental health prohibitor reports [were] submitted by healthcare facilities or personnel.”
“Then in December of 2019, at the age of 19, the individual applied for a FOID card. The subject was under 21 and the application was sponsored by the subject’s father. Therefore, at the time of FOID application review in January of 2020, there was insufficient basis to establish a clear and present danger and deny the FOID application,” ISP explained.
“The individual passed four background checks when purchasing firearms,” on June 9, 2020; on July 18 and July 31, 2020; and on Sept. 20, 2021.

As Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) had suggested in the wake of the news of the shooting, the suspect was “‘known to the police.’ The public deserves to know why!” Now that an answer to that question has been provided, it would appear even more questions have arisen.
