As he was heading out the door, a retiring NYPD detective reportedly one-finger-saluted his employer for the last 20 years.
In a social media message (that may have been subsequently deleted), “Thomas J. Gambardella, 41, of Staten Island, posted a photo on Facebook of himself flipping the bird at a memorial inside NYPD headquarters, while wearing a T-shirt reading ‘Let’s Go Brandon,'” the New York Post reported.
As the Post has previously noted, cops in the crime-ridden city are retiring in droves. A record-setting 1,500-or-more cops have left the NYPD this year alone through May 31. About one-third of those stepping down through pre-retirement resignations apparently in favor of better law enforcement opportunities elsewhere, resulting in the Big Apple’s force being understaffed. The number of those heading for the exits has since risen to about 2,100.
“I’m officially retired today!” Gambardella purportedly wrote on the social media platform in relation to the image. “From this sorry excuse of a s–t job. Thank God, I’m free at last!… I loved everyone I worked with and ‘some’ of the people I’ve worked for. But this job is no one’s friend. Time to live free. I’ll see you all out there!”
“It’s the worst f—ing job in the world,” Gambardella, who is from a police family, told the Post. “They own you. They’re not your friends. All that talk about the ‘big blue family.’ They don’t care. If I die tomorrow they wouldn’t give a sh-t. If I needed something it ain’t gonna happen. I’m better off just saying a prayer.”
Gambardella’s purported Facebook page similarly indicates that he is “Retired from the WORST ‘Job’ in the World. The NYPD.”

The detective appears to be one of many lawmen and women who have become disillusioned with soft-on-crime polices in areas under Democrat control, especially in New York with its disastrous catch-and-release, so-called bail reform law.
“The potty-mouthed former officer said he was disgusted by the increased hostility toward police, calls to defund the NYPD and crackdowns on what cops could or could not do,” the Post noted about Gambardella, who described himself as a previous “true believer” in law enforcement.
“Crime is soaring and cops are leaving in droves,” the NYPD veteran declared. “Anybody can see that. All this liberalism is obviously a failure. But this is what they wanted. It’s a stupid experiment and it’s the people who will pay in the end.”

“The statue he took aim at depicts a police officer watching over the child of a slain cop — and several current and retired NYPD detectives said they were stung and angered by seeing the photo of Gambardella giving it the finger in One Police Plaza,” the Post explained.
After cashing out with a guaranteed lifetime pension, some police retirees are still young enough to qualify to join another department; in the alternative, they can often pursue a lucrative second career in private-security-aligned fields or in other endeavors.
Gambardella, a divorced dad who was named officer of the year in 2006, reportedly earned $164,000 in 2021. Over his career, he was reportedly hit with 14 on-duty complaints, but none apparently resulted in any disciplinary action imposed by the NYPD.
