Two days after a young mother was fatally shot while pushing her three-month-old in a stroller on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, her ex-boyfriend and father of her child was arrested and charged with murder.

Azsia Johnson, 20, was walking with her three-month-old daughter Khloe near East 95th St. and Lexington Ave Wednesday night when she was shot in the head close to the Samuel Seabury Playground. New York Police Department sources reported that she had been on her way to meet her ex-boyfriend, 22-year-old Isaac Argro, to “talk some things out,” according to the New York Daily News.

“It appears she was targeted, not a stray bullet. Close contact wound to the head. She had powder burns on her head, to show you how close he was,” the police had reported at the onset of the investigation. By Friday, Argro had gone from being a person of interest to a suspect in the murder of Johnson and he was arrested in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Surveillance footage from the area showed the suspect pacing in front of a nearby residence prior to the murder of Johnson. The Daily Mail reported that only one shot had been fired at the scene before the suspect fled on foot. The infant child was not physically harmed.

Johnson had been living not far from the scene of her murder in a shelter for abused women in East Harlem. She had relocated there after Argro had allegedly assaulted her while she was six months pregnant with his child.

Lisa Desort, Johnson’s mother, told Fox News Digital that the ex-boyfriend had been consistently threatening toward her whole family and that they had reported his harassment to the NYPD.

“He threatened me with death, my daughter with death, and my other daughter with death,” she said. “We called the precinct numerous times.”

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell released a statement on the arrest of Argro late Friday.

“Isaac Argro, 22, has been arrested and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in regard to the tragic shooting of Azsia Johnson on the Upper East Side of Manhattan,” the tweet read. “@NYPDDetectives continue to be relentless in their pursuit of justice.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) who has repeatedly shifted blame for the continued violence in his city did so again Wednesday after the initial report of Johnson’s death. “This entire day we have been addressing the problem of overproliferation of guns on our street,” Fox News reported him saying, “how readily accessible they are and how there is just no fear in using these guns on innocent New Yorkers. This is the result of that.”

While he didn’t take the blame, he was more than happy to take the credit for the arrest of Argro when he tweeted ahead of commending the NYPD, “I’m relieved to report to New Yorkers that we have captured the individual who we believe murdered this young woman as she walked with her baby.”

Johnson’s murder was the first recorded in the area serviced by the 19th police precinct and, as the Daily Mail reported, is “generally among the safest in the city.” There were only two recorded murders in the 19th Precinct throughout all of 2021. The Daily News also noted that overall murder had declined in NYC compared to this time last year. There were 226 killed in 2021 compared to 197 killed so far in 2022.

Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s residence, is also located within the 19th Precinct.
