‘It’s our job’: CNN’s Don Lemon surprisingly revisits Biden’s mental fitness

After spending years relentlessly bashing Donald Trump and anything Republican, CNN host Don Lemon now implies that journalism, rather than liberal activism, is part of his job description.

That’s why Lemon asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about “nice man” President Joe Biden’s physical and mental stamina for a second term, which Biden says he intends to seek.

In another sudden turnaround, Lemon lamented a double-standard in which the media seldom poses tough questions to Democrats. He also admitted that he himself, as he has gotten older, has lost some velocity off of his metaphorical fastball.

Lemon went on CNN “New Day” on Wednesday to seemingly take a victory lap about the news-making Jean-Pierre interview, in which the latter was dismissive of inquiries about the president’s health. “That is not a question that we should be even asking,” she told Lemon in that interview.

“Of course we should be asking that question,” the self-congratulatory Lemon remarked to his CNN colleagues in the video clip embedded above. “First of all, I’m a journalist. That’s my job, is to ask questions, and as the person who represents the administration and the president, it is her job to answer those questions. I would not be doing my job if I didn’t ask that,” Lemon claimed.

“Let’s just be honest about this… I’m not being ageist and saying that the president of the United States is too old to be president; we can judge that. I think that’s an individual thing, right? But I do think that as a president of the United States we should know the health history, both physically and mentally, of the president of the United States. We certainly questioned the former president’s capabilities and whether or not he should have the mental capacity, quite frankly, and the physical capacity to be the president of the United States, and we did it a lot,” he continued, along with including some Trump-bashing based on what the partisan House January 6 committee has presented.

“I’m not comparing the two men,” the CNN host explained. “But it is our job as journalists and as Americans to know the physical and mental capacity of the president of the United States.

“And I want to be very clear about this. I think Joe Biden is a nice man. He’s gonna be, you know, he’s almost 80 years old. I am in my 50s. I have trouble recalling things. I’m not as sharp as I used to be. And the job of president of the United States is a really, really tough job,” the anchor, who ex-President Trump memorably described as the dumbest man on television, admitted.

“Maybe he is — I’m sure he’s up to the job, but it is my job as a journalist to ask. And the reason I asked that question is because of there are reports that are coming out, there’s a report in The New York Times about what Democrats are saying, that there are whispers, and we know that as journalists, we know there are whispers, and we interview the president, we watch him in press conferences…”

Lemon noted that Biden’s answers during interviews and press conferences “are not succinct” and sometimes they “don’t make sense.”

Perhaps with a nod to new CNN management which purportedly wants the channel to move off from editorializing and get back to news, Lemon (or Luh-Mon, as Fox News host Tucker Carlson pronounces it) concluded that portion of the segment by calling for even-handed coverage.

“Liberals need to stop having a double standard when it comes to questions that we can ask Democrats and questions that we can ask Republicans. I reported a number of times, many times, on Donald Trump’s fitness for office. And it is okay. And expected for journalists to report on the current president’s fitness for office, whether that president is a Democrat or a Republican. We have to have the same standards for both,” he said.

The subtext here perhaps is that The New York Times has given the corporate media the go-ahead to raise questions about the cognitive abilities of gaffe-prone Biden as the Democrat establishment seemingly coordinates attempts to usher the president off the national stage as his job approval, based on polls, continues to tank.
