Sports Illustrated says SCOTUS ruling for praying coach ‘erodes democracy’

Sports Illustrated is taking heavy fire over a tweet suggesting that a Supreme Court ruling in favor of a former high school football coach who was fired for kneeling in silent prayer after games would be a blow against democracy, the latest example of the sad decay of a magazine that was once an American institution before it became a propaganda vehicle for radical leftist ideology.

The nation’s highest court will decide the case of Joe Kennedy, a retired USMC gunnery sergeant and combat veteran who in 2015 was fired by the Bremerton School District in Washington State for honoring God at the 50-yard-line at the completion of games. He was unceremoniously dumped from his job after refusing to obey orders to cease and desist resulting in a long legal battle that has made its way to the SCOTUS.

SI, which has celebrated cop-hating, anti-American heel Colin Kaepernick as its sportsperson of the year and specializes in evangelizing for the “woke” left, has a serious problem with the bedrock principle of religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution and decried a ruling in Kennedy’s favor as a danger to “democracy” – a term that has been hijacked by power-drunk Democrats and the cultural revolutionary left.

“SCOTUS will soon rule on the case of a public school football coach who wants to pray on-field after games,” the outlet tweeted. “@GregBishopSI on Joe Kennedy, the machine backing him and the expected result: a win for Kennedy and an erosion of a bedrock of American democracy” with a link to its article.

In its long article on Kennedy’s case, SI gets to the heart of the beef, it’s all about Trump: “While its numbers shrank, the Christian conservative base was reinvigorated and emboldened over the past seven years, anyway. That owes mostly to Donald Trump’s presidency, his proposed Muslim ban and anti-immigration stances, his border wall and inciting rhetoric; and his appointments of religious conservatives to the judiciary’s most powerful positions.”

Twitter reacted strongly to SI’s claim that protecting religious freedom is akin to an erosion of democracy.

“Actually, the Court affirming Coach Kennedy’s right to live his faith upholds the bedrock of our democracy—it doesn’t erode it,” Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma wrote.

“Radical leftists at @SINow attack prayer AFTER football game as being against ‘democracy’– which is reminder they want to ban Christianity,” wrote Tom Fitton of conservative watchdog Judicial Watch.

“Disappointing article Greg,” wrote former NFL Kicker Jay Feely, “I knelt and prayed after every game I played in the NFL. It was my way of publicly thanking god. With all the challenges in todays society we should encourage faith not discourage.”

“Freedom OF religion is very different than freedom FROM religion.”

More reactions to SI’s ridiculous assertion.

“The First Amendment really means a lot to me,” Kennedy told Fox News, “and it is really terrible today in America that somebody can be fired just for expressing their faith. So I am just fighting so that no one else ever has to go through this and doesn’t have to choose between their job and their faith.”

“Every time I took the oath of enlistment it really meant something to me,” he added. “Supporting and defending the Constitution, it makes my hair stand up just today even saying it, and I am a fighter. I have always been a fighter.”

“That’s why I joined the Marines. I wanted to be a part of that fighting force, and I can also serve here in doing this battle right now. The Marine in me just wanted to fight. It’s a long battle, but I am here for it,” Kennedy said.

  1. Drag Queen Sports Illustrated, put a MAN pretending to be a Woman as a COVER on their RAG Magazine, so FK>>YOU>SI !

  2. It is interesting – and scary – to watch the
left attempt to influence the SCOTUS, using mass media and leftist thugs and goons.

  3. The more the USA turns its back on God the worse it will go for us in the future. The Bible is full of this type of situation and every time when God acts it isn’t good for the offenders. The people at SI need to read their Bible more and used their brains less.

  4. What has happened to sports and si? They’re just sad pathetic losers that turn fans stomachs. Baseball is supposed to be AMERICAS NATIONAL PAST TIME??? as in old days. Conservative days. But now they hate God, the flag and straight people. Wtf has happened to you? Nobody wants to watch men in dresses play football or an all black sport like basketball. We want sports back. Competition and rivalry! Not your woke garbage.

  5. So what did SI have to say about Bidens MInistry of Truth and the erosion of democracy?

  6. well sort of. We are a REPUBLIC. The 1st Amendment is there to protect against “mob rule” or the tyranny of the majority over a minority. But this assertion has been flung around so often for anything the “woke” don’t like that it has become totally meaningless.

  7. Is SI still around ? – I thought they folded years ago !!! Worthless crap magazine anyway LOL

  8. A guy doing something that, according to a secular mind, has nothing to do with democracy, but that same mind calls it a threat to democracy. Praying by yourself doesn’t have any impact on whether your neighbors vote for the elephant or the ass, according to the irreligious. Only if prayer actually works, and can influence outcomes for good or bad (and especially for the latter), does getting uppity about it make any sense.
Or is theirs a neurotic fear of religion? Don’t answer that.

  9. It is not even any good for bird cage liner or potty training a pup. LET’S GO BRANDON! WeLoveTrump.com

  10. it should remember that the founding fathers used the term this country is founded under god . at that time it was christain and jewish, si writers should get a life as writers which most of them are not

  11. Let’s just test SI’s idiot statement. Democracies use votes to determine what the majority wants. Were We, The People to vote on whether or not this coach threatened democracy by praying by himself after a game, how do you think it would turn out?

  12. As far as I can ascertain the Coach did not even ask if any student-athletes wanted to join him in prayer. He prayed by himself after the game, on the field he revered. There is NO WAY anyone, especially Sports Illustrated, should have any authority or reason to bring the action up and comment on it. This was his private moment with God, no matter where he chose to pray.

  13. Looks like Sports Illustrated is in the same toilet swirl as cnn and ny time

  14. This guy better stick to sports because the whole reason for the founding of the United States was for freedom of religion. When we were able to pray in schools and the ten commandments were posted everywhere , we didn’t have all these kids committing mass murder. In god we trust is written on our money as well as on the walls of our government buildings for a reason and our rights are those given by god ,that no man can take away.

  15. Little surprise here. Much like ESPN and Disney, S.I.’s once prestigious corporate culture now springs from the wellhead of Woke-ism. The only effective pushback is to stop paying good money for this tattered old rag. #BoycottSI.

  16. The day democracy died is when a cheap sleazy, disrespectful, magazine few people read, denounces our freedom to worship as we please. Demands we behave and worship only in a way that which is acceptable and approved by the state and their corrupt yellow journalism.

  17. I’ve given up on Sports Illustrated YEARS ago, and this latest rant of theirs just confirms I made the right call!

I don’t want/need FAT athletes nor LGBTQ-wtf “women” (with their “junk”) in swimwear (or as cheerleaders)!

    Goodbye (still)!
