Famed conservative actor Jon Voight offered up the latest in his series of brief, impassioned addresses to the American people, this time diverging from the typical right-of-center position on the Second Amendment, with a proposal on “proper qualifications for gun ownership.”
An avid supporter of former President Donald Trump, the actor seemed at odds with the president’s reaction to the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas where 19 children and two teachers were murdered. Whereas Trump called for improved security measures at schools making them the “single hardest target in our country,” Voight sought to address access to firearms.
“We must identify every individual for their credentials, for their mental capacity to bear arms,” the actor implored. “There should be proper qualifications for gun ownership and proper testing. One should only own a gun if they’re qualified and schooled.”
Throughout his address, Voight attempted to make clear his belief that his proposal was not partisan but commonsense, stating, “It’s not about left, right, guns, no guns. This is about brains that are dysfunctioning. This is mental. This is not about healthy human beings serving the country with arms to bear or even the right of this Constitution for bearing arms.”
He even went as far as to suggest that not taking steps to address the mental health of would-be gun owners would be the downfall of the Second Amendment altogether.
“It is a right to use arms with proper purpose to defend one’s safety. We must not allow mental illness to take away our right to bear arms. This is about trusting the Constitution; our rights; our reason,” he contended.
Voight also lamented the tragic loss of life and the tragedy of ongoing abuse that he ascribed to the suspect’s upbringing that drove him to commit such evil.
“Oh, how my heart bleeds for all those lost. My soul cries – we must do something about these horrors that are taken out on innocent beings, humans who each have lives and years of life that they’re supposed to live. They’ve been taken down by insanity. These insane, inhuman, disturbed walking souls have grown up in households of abuse. These beings have been bullied and they take out their disturbances, their grief, their horror on innocent souls,” Voight said.
He further blamed the cultural rot pervasive throughout American society on those in office who simply don’t hold the same values as the average American, stating, “My fellow Americans, we’re living now in a world that has no remorse for wrongdoings because we’re being led by the worst in office. So let’s take a breath, let’s all ask God to make sure that we will never see this horror again in this lifetime.”
Trump had espoused similar notions in his speech to the National Rifle Association convention Friday where he stated, “Every time a disturbed or demented person commits such a hideous crime, there’s always a grotesque effort by some in our society to use the suffering of others to advance their own political agenda.”
Of course, while the left saw this as an opportunity to suggest a fissure in conservative politics and use it as further support for their own radical agendas, they failed to acknowledge their own ever-present inconsistencies as little more than a week ago they were accusing the actor of needing psychiatric help for his previous video.

While Voight’s specific call to action may not be the standard for conservative-minded Americans, it at least holds a logical consistency that can be discussed on its merits rather than being forced by feelings as woke politicians so often do. As such, his overall message was also consistent with his outspoken beliefs on the importance of faith in our culture noting, “These innocent souls that were taken from each family are children of God and must remind us all that God will take home these angels and comfort them.”
In conclusion, he remarked, “I stand with all. I stand for freedom of each soul’s truths. I stand for God’s truths. I stand for one to be condemned for evil-doings and that they must pay a price. May God watch over all and bring comfort for this loss which may never heal, for each child was so precious a gift. And God will call on Jesus to pray for these families.”

What qualifications? Saying you won’t kill someone who doesn’t deserve it? Being able to hit your target? Pinky swearing you’re not a lunatic?
I think the elimination of the fbi would drastically reduce the violence against children and other citizens.
Question Jon, just who will make the determination of “proper qualifications for gun ownership.”? Perhaps our mentally sound, Assistant Secretary for Health, Admiral Rachel L. Levine, MD, or will it be some other distinguished professional within this administration of usurpers, who I am pretty sure would disqualify me, based only on this comment!The 2nd Amendment is the most absolute, the most clearly written of them all, it reads more like one of the Ten Commandments, “shall NOT be infringed”, what could be more clear, more concise? It deliberately does NOT specify the federal government, as it would serve NO purpose if any other governmental entity could infringe on out unalienable Right, and yet, all do, the 2nd Amendment is the most infringed, restricted, limited, controlled and denied by all afore mentioned entities!
We have already allowed far to much, as so many on the Left attempt to argue that the 2nd Amendment was written in the time of muskets and should be limited to that time, the fact is, their reasoning is flawed, as at that time, musket were state of the art, hence, we should all be allowed, perhaps issued M-4’s and RPG’s, even Javelin missiles, as the purpose of the 2nd was to protect our freedom, our liberty, our Rights, from a tyrannical government, such as we are now seeing!

I am a long time gun owner/collector and CCW permit holder. I do not have a problem with sane controls on gun ownership. I live in THE most restrictive state in the country, but I am still able to do what I need to do, to own guns and protect myself. I do not believe every immature teenager has a right to own a gun, or any deranged person that can lie on forms and purchase a gun. A sane and civil society, does need common sense laws. Universal background checks are ok, waiting periods are ok for me, but many do not want any qualifications and restrictions-which will make the Democrats try ever more draconian means like suing and bankrupting the gun and ammo industry, where none of them can afford to do business or provide products – that is what I see in our future.

I see a Catch-22 coming on this. If you wish to purchase a firearm you are dysfunctional, and therefore unqualified. If you do not wish to purchase a firearm you are functional, and therefore qualified. What could possibly go wrong?
I agree with the fact that we have the 2nd Amendment but it would not hurt to do psychological test and gun knowledge for future gun holders.
And said psychological evaluation would be conducted by who exactly, the purpled hair man, who became a woman while at Stanford or Yale earning a degree in psychology and minoring in Social Justice studies?
Actions have consequences, even well thought out actions have unforeseen consequences, we call it “Murphy’s Law” and it is the only law that has ever proven to be absolute, as it can not be broken!

I;m proud to say that in New Jersey we do have something like that. We have no gun shops here. If you want one you have to order it online. Plus you have to show valid proof that you’re 21 years old and have to be subjected to a serious background check. Plus go through a 3 week waiting period. And NO ASSULT RIFLES ARE ALLOWED TO BE SOLD!! Assult rifles are for military ONLY!! The only guns allowed to be sold in this state are handguns and hunting rifles. And we have not had one school shooting!!
PLUS Jersey cops are the BEST! I can attest! My cousin is one.
In other words, you can own a gun but you have to have a background check and go through a waiting period. I think that’s fair, don;t you?
Can you describe the process for ordering a gun online including how it is received? Federal law requires that any firearm ordered as you describe must be shipped to a FFL dealer where the buyer must go, complete the ATF form 4473 and pass a NICS background check in addition to required state laws. Then that begs the question, if there are no gun shops there how does one find a federally licensed firearms dealer to complete the sale of the firearm ordered online?
So the background check you see as fair is already in effect in NJ as well as the other 49 states.
Oh and thank God I live in a deep red state, we did have a school shooter about 20 or so years ago. The good news is it was stopped
by I believe the Vice Principal who had his own gun.

I believe most gun owners like me would support that if there could be an iron clad guarantee that those qualification are not subject to the subjective opinion of the person making a determination or the powers currently in control of government.
Hmm…as long as we give same metal test PLUS an IQ test to anyone running for office, including ALL POTUS Vice Potus…etc. That would prove interesting, to say the least!

Criminals will always know how to avoid the law and criminally get guns. Protect the masses by arming the populous like in Switzerland. The crime rates have gone down in Switzerland and Israel because people are armed and trained to use their guns.

The need to get the Mentally Ill off the streets and monitored has been a longtime coming.I am positive the ACLU will fight it but American citizens have had enough of the Mass Shootings and Americans are Not going to give away their guns anytime soon!!! Those citizens that roam this country, not taking their medication, keeping to themselves until they have ” an episode” or those that hide away, not taking their medication for Schizophrenia, endangering themselves as well as others. We need to address MENTAL ILLNESS! When anyone wants to apply for a gun now, they must include any mental health experiences, medications, hospitalizations. The same as with any Felon. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.00. Of course the length of time it takes to get a gun may take longer as the research for the application wil most certainly require more time, but, you cannot have your cake and eat it too!!! I will be happier knowing it is saving a mentally ill person from putting a semi-automatic into his/her hands. I do without a doubt, believe opening Health Centers for these Mentally Ill persons will help this country in a major way!

You are correct. When the government stepped in to tell us how we could discipline our children that was a the beginning of the end. As a boomer I can attest to getting my ass beat and if I got fresh I received a bar of soap in my mouth. I was not abused as a child and turned out pretty well. I had great, loving parents.

Jon’s wrong on this. What he’s advocating is Red Flagging. It’s unconstitutional and has me wondering if his Conservatism is melting away as he ages.
