When it comes to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) “extreme” and “aggressive” advocacy for abortion, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone made clear why he is having no part in it, and it has “nothing to do” with the SCOTUS leak.
On Friday, Cordileone sat down with America Media’s Gloria Purvis for her podcast to discuss what ultimately led the archbishop to bar Pelosi from Holy Communion in her home diocese. As previously reported, the statement on the matter spoke to “the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing, an (sic) the danger to her own soul she is risking.”
However, what the archbishop is making apparent, is that Justice Samuel Alito’s leaked draft majority opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that would see Roe v. Wade overturned played no part his announcement.
When asked by Purvis, “why make this decision now?” the archbishop replied, “The leaked decision and the Dobbs case really have nothing to do with it, the timing of it.”
Cordileone went on to detail, “Her advocacy for codifying the Roe decision into federal law–it’s becoming more and more extreme and more and more aggressive. And I’ve been trying to speak with her about this.”
“I’ve been debating this within my own conscience for many years, actually,” he added of the struggle he had in coming to this conclusion. “So this is not something that has just come up recently. I’ve been discerning this. I’ve consulted with people whom I respect for their intelligence, their integrity and their pastoral sensitivity.”
He also cited former Pope Benedict XVI, then-Cardinal Ratzinger, who was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2004 when he issued a letter with guidance to the bishops. The cardinal had encouraged a dialogue, which Cordileone has endeavored to have, and “if after several attempts it comes to the point where it’s…not going to happen…the person is not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”
Cordileone boiled the matter down to the clear delineation between right and wrong. “The point of our conscience is not to decide what is right and wrong…The role of conscience is to help us make the right decision in a specific situation based on what is right and wrong.”

As such, the archbishop has nailed one of the main issues of the time as the media continues to assign themselves the responsibility of drawing those distinctions. CNN’s Jim Sciutto wasn’t alone in attempting to use his Catholic upbringing to offer himself the moral high ground over Cordilieone.
The San Francisco Examiner’s editorial board devoted an op-ed to defending Pelosi and calling for the removal of Cordileone. “Pelosi has consistently fought on the morally right side of these issues,” they argued. “Why is she being singled out for punishment in her hometown, especially when she can still receive Communion in Washington, D.C. or Oakland?”
According to them, “The answer is that Cordileone’s chief loyalty is not to Christ, but to the cabal of far-right American bishops.”
Yet, the Catechism is clear in stating, “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.”
Pelosi and her devout followers in the left-wing media may not like it, but to accept Catholicism is to accept, in part, that you are not the center of the universe. Short of that, and the archbishop contends she is embroiled in scandal.
“Scandal is an action that would lead others into error or into sin. So the scandal here is that someone who is strongly advocating for something as evil as abortion and taking Communion creates confusion among people. And they can begin to think that it is acceptable for a Catholic to believe this,” Cordileone explained.
Ultimately, “on this issue,” he expressed, “she needs to better form her conscience.”

I am NOT a Catholic. Then again, neither is the United States and, moreover, I’m old enough to remember when even so middle of the road a publication as “The Readers’ Digest” was regularly running (3-4 times a year minimum) articles detailing the horrors of “backstreet abortions”. As a (retired) lawyer, I can tell you that Roe is terrible law – poorly written, poorly analyzed, almost embarrassingly bad in its reasoning. On the other hand, I’m not so sure that, at least as originally written, it was bad policy – of course, as originally written it didn’t validate such reprehensible practices as late term and partial birth abortions. We can go around and around on this issue, from every angle and we are never going to even approach substantial agreement. Indeed, I have almost as many disagreements with myself over these issues as I have with other people. What I can say is that I totally agree with the Bishop. Pelosi cannot take the position of extreme advocacy which she has adopted and still claim the approval of the Church. She cannot, in short, be “pro-abortion” and “Catholic”, She can, however, distinguish her personal and religious views from her obligations as a Senator who represents non-Catholics as well, but that would require her to take a balanced and equitable view of and approach to matters and that would not serve her political purposes..
It’s about time that these corrupt lying hypocritical pseudo-Catholics were excommunicated and the entire O’Biden crime family should be next.

This is WAY too long in coming. I have been upset for DECADES that this advocate for infanticide was being allowed to waltz into church as if she were Mother Theresa. She should have been banned from Communion YEARS ago. As a matter of fact, any priest who gives her Communion should be defrocked and the Pope should have said LONG ago that any politician who supports abortion should be refused the Sacraments.
There isn’t any question of them being “confused” about Church teachings. No Catholic is “confused” about if abortion is a sin or not – it is, period. It is bad enough that these politicians will do whatever evil they feel will keep them in office, but Piglousy goes WAY beyond that by advocating FOR it at ALL stages of pregnancy as well as saying it is evil to NOT allow abortion. She knows EXACTLY what she’s doing.

The bishop of DC, Wilton Cardinal Gregory, should show that he has the same intestinal fortitude as Cardileone. I’ll wager he doesn’t.

Catholics believe that life begins at conception so why was this a difficult decision? Pelosi and Biden should have been banned long ago and these “leaders” of the Catholic Church are hypocrites if they struggle with the “sanctity of life” and such fundamental tenants of the Church.
I asked the same question….and the answer I get is the Catholic Church doesn’t want to “appear” to inject itself in to legislative debates. But it doesn’t change the fact that Pelosi and Schumer etc could very easily “abstain for religious reasons” when it came to a vote. They never did. All the while they flaunt their “Catholic” cred….so two-faced.
Pelosi the politician – any public appearance can have value if it advertises the politico effectively. Being denied communion is an opportunity, even if otherwise regrettable.
I’m sure “religious” Pelosi goes to church in Washington DC too. What’s to stop her from receiving communion there if the bishop in DC doesn’t ban her communion also? He probably doesn’t recognize her and one of his priests may think she’s probably some old hag who came in from the street. The priest would be right, but still, she doesn’t deserve to receive Holy Communion is she’s banned in California.

ROE Vs. WADE – The real story.
Democrats have no one but themselves for the current status of Roe vs. Wade and the availability of abortion on demand. Roe vs. Wade and abortion on demand have been the Democrat’s rallying cry for the past half century and has made the Democrats BILLIONS of dollars over that same half century. The Democrats aren’t really surprised about the Supreme Court’s impending decision, it was bound to happen sooner or later. What really causes Democrat’s concern regarding Roe v. Wade and abortion on demand is the loss of the BILLIONS in fund raising on this issue.
If Democrats really cared, they could have passed laws in the past half century to protect abortion. They have held majorities in the House for most of that time and the Senate for a good portion as well. They even had Democrat Presidents during that time, but NO WAY would they do that and jeopardize their cash cow.
Democrats have controlled the House of Representatives for 34 of the past 50 years, the Senate for 26 of those 50 years and the Presidency for 26 of those 50 years. Democrats have controlled all three, House, Senate, and Presidency for 14 of those years, and both the House and Senate for 24 of those years. If they really wanted to do something to protect abortion on demand, they could have. But, why kill the Golden Goose, the abortion debate and the threat of ending abortion on demand has made the Democrats Billions.
In my opinion, the real story is that Roe legalized abortions up to the second of birth. In no way can ANYBODY say that is not murder for the “convenience” of a mother. “My body, my choice” at the moment of birth is PREPOSTEROUS.

Allowing the states to decide on this abortion issue should have been where it was at all this time. Letting the federal government to be in control of this just meant more money for the DNC. Federally funded abortions just meant we were all paying for it and thus Democrat candidates receive “contributions” to their campaigns. And to those supporting abortions up to the time of birth? We are getting like the Russian government who cares nothing for the human life. After all, aren’t we all expendable?
