Couple pictured celebrating anniversary at Bahamas Sandals resort die from ‘faulty air conditioning,’ allegedly

Vincent Chiarella, 64, a retiree who came from Florida and was celebrating his anniversary with his wife at the luxury resort Sandals in the Bahamas, was one of three Americans who suddenly died on the island Friday allegedly due to faulty air conditioning.

A picture has surfaced showing Chiarella and his wife Donnis, 64, celebrating their anniversary just days before he died and she fell seriously ill. Chiarella lived in Panama City, Florida but was originally from Alabama.

The actual cause of death of the Americans has not been definitively determined by the coroner yet, but according to the Daily Mail faulty air conditioning is suspected. Autopsy results are expected Monday.

The retiree’s body was found shortly after 9 am on Friday in his villa by hotel staff who then called the local police. His wife had to be airlifted to a hospital in Florida. According to her brother, Steve Mulder, she is in intensive care in Miami and is covered in rashes.

Officers from George Town Police Station quickly arrived on the scene and were informed that another couple was found unresponsive as well. The end result was that three Americans died and authorities desperately began looking for answers.

All four Americans had reportedly felt ill the night before and had sought medical treatment at a health clinic. The second couple is still unidentified but all of them reportedly suffered convulsions before dying.

Chiarella’s wife woke up paralyzed and found her husband unresponsive, according to the couple’s son Austin Chiarella who spoke with ABC News.

“She woke up and my dad was laying there on the floor, and she couldn’t move,” the son stated. “Her legs and arms was swollen and she couldn’t move and she screamed to get someone to come in the door.”

“I am just so heartbroken right now. My dad was everything to me,” the son sadly stated.

Chris Coucheron-Aamot, who was also vacationing at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort in Exuma, commented on Facebook, “Three of our neighbors in the building right next to us died and a fourth was airlifted in critical condition early yesterday.”

“There was crime scene tape and security guards all around our unit,” he commented.

“It sounds like it may have been a fault with the a/c in the unit, causing a toxic coolant leak,” Coucheron-Aamot added. “It was hard to sleep last night – every time the a/c came on, I woke up. We’re continuing our vacation because that’s what I would want people to do if I were to have been one who died – celebrate my life by living yours to the fullest. That said, our hearts are with those who grieve. May God have mercy on them and us.”

The luxurious five-star adults-only resort is all-inclusive and is located in a secluded area encompassing 500 acres of tropical land. It has a mile-long beach, three pools, 11 restaurants, and an award-winning golf course. Villas charge up to $1,227 a night, according to the Daily Mail.

  1. I’m thinking methyl alcohol poisoning. If so, then they wouldn’t be the first to have been poisoned by methyl alcohol found in resort hotel provided liquor in sealed bottles or not.

  5. Faulty AC? So, they were electrocuted when they went to reset it? This is going to take some interesting investigation…

    1. No…the implication is leaking freon. I said as much earlier….plus this possibility..legionnaires disease also related to cooling towers used for A/C…and their water treatment systems.

      1. Legionnaires wouldn’t have killed them that quickly. Some type of highly toxic gas or food poisoning (like methanol in their drinks or Ciguatera from infected fish like Tilapia) is more likely. The A/C theory has holes in it. They were in two or three separate villas. Unless they shared the same A/C unit which doesn’t appear to be that likely, but they haven’t told us exactly where or when. Then you have to rule out organophosphate poisoning, like using banned chemicals to eliminate insects which is also an even bet. I expect they’re going to have a lot of empty rooms for quite a while if they don’t shut down the entire place and go over it with a fine-tooth comb (which would be the wisest move if they ever want to get people back there again)
