Molly Jong-Fast bemoans ‘cruelty’ of Trump’s border wall working as a deterrent to illegal entry

Personal responsibility and adherence to the law were evidently concepts totally overlooked by one left-wing writer who concluded the purposed of the U.S. – Mexico border wall is “cruelty” on account of an increase in fall victim’s since former President Donald Trump pushed for a higher barrier.

The Washington Post released a story Friday meant to expose the danger of the newer 30-foot segments of the border wall as trauma wards in border towns have seen an uptick in patients with injuries made in attempting to surmount the obstacle. Since 2019, the Post reported a fivefold increase, amounting to 375 patients, at the University of California San Diego Medical Center’s trauma ward alone.

As Jay Doucet, the chief of UC San Diego Health’s trauma division pointed out, “Once you go over 20 feet, and up to 30 feet, the chance of sever injury and death are higher. We’re seeing injuries we didn’t see before: pelvic fractures, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries and a lot of open fractures when the bone comes through the skin.”

The Atlantic’s Molly Jong-Fast didn’t quite comprehend that the risk of those injuries was part of point in designing a wall that high as it is meant to deter migrants from attempting to illegally enter the country. Instead, she contends, “I was told the cruelty is the point and that certainly seems true here.”

Having previously missed the point of the uniquely American holiday Thanksgiving, arguing it was not, as the name implies, a time to give thanks with loved ones but rather a perfect opportunity to seek to “deprogram” your conservative relatives, it doesn’t take much of a leap to see why she might struggle with a concept like national sovereignty.

Let’s face it, she did admit in that piece that she claimed was “a humor piece”, “I’m no statistician–in fact I’m barely able to add and subtract,” so higher level concepts like the rule of law may be truly confounding. Thankfully, there were plenty of thoughtful citizens more than willing to help Jong-Fast and her ilk understand how to arrive at a logical conclusion.

Of course, Jong-Fast’s argument about cruelty was further nullified by the basic facts laid out in the Post’s article from the get-go. If that were the point, there would not have been 375 patients brought to UC San Diego for care and treatment. Not only would they have been turned away, if they ever made it to the hospital at all, they would have been left crippled at the base of the wall.

As one Twitter user wrote, “They are morons to attempt to climb a 30-foot wall built to keep them out. The fact that this is America means we take them to a trauma center rather than leave them to die.”

Whether it is believed the wall should be electrified or include a moat filled with dangerous reptiles and sharks with lasers on their heads, the point is still deterrence as laws go ignored.
