Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is under fire over his leaked comments regarding the January 6th 2001 attacks, and now billboards are going up in his neighborhood to join in the general criticism.
The billboards were paid for by the Republican Accountability Project, and showcases McCarthy’s flip-flops about January 6th, drawing attention to the leaked tapes of his comments about then-president Donald Trump, that “we’ve heard the tapes, Kevin,” and to “stop lying about January 6th.”

McCarthy has faced considerable criticism all around for his handling of the January 6th attacks.
It didn’t help McCarthy’s case when he was caught in an apparent lie about what he had said, as he tried to deny the comments, aided by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who clearly wanted the story to die out and go away. When Rachel Maddow of MSNBC aired the recorded phone call of him making his disparaging comments about Trump and other Republicans egging on the unconstitutional riot, it led to some very awkward discussions and a scramble within the GOP.
While McCarthy is frantically working behind the scenes to smooth things over within the GOP, the Republican Accountability Project released a statement declaring their intention to keep the heat on him, presumably with a clear eye towards the congressional midterm elections in November. The billboards will be up for two weeks in six locations throughout McCarthy’s district. The website includes a map of the locations that will feature one of the ads.
“After McCarthy denied reports that he held Donald Trump responsible for inciting the attack on the Capitol and asked Trump to resign, audio recordings of his comments proved he was lying to the public. We’re going to make sure he can’t simply brush off these revelations,” part of the statement reads.
Whether or not the ads will be very effective remains to be seen. A recent report by Axios suggests Democrats are having remorse about the January 6 Committee, and more specifically, coming to regret the many leaks surrounding the committee and the events on that day.
From the report: “Committee members and their staff are growing anxious about the torrent of leaks. They fear they’ll breed complacency in a country already distracted by inflation, Ukraine and the lingering coronavirus pandemic…[a] related concern: regaining public interest now that former President Trump and his red-hot rhetoric are no longer daily fixtures in their lives.”
The report concludes that after years of ‘bombshells’ that go nowhere, Americans have become numb to screaming headlines and accusations. With inflation and high gas prices on their minds, billboards aimed at keeping the heat on McCarthy might ultimately be standing alone in the cold.
