A purported dispute over her son’s missing backpack allegedly led to a Memphis mom calling in a bomb threat to an elementary school, according to local authorities.
The woman is reportedly charged with a threat of mass violence on school property or at a school-related activity, which is apparently a misdemeanor under Tennessee law. She is due back in court on Thursday.
“According to an affidavit, a teacher’s assistant said a woman called the school asking about her son’s missing backpack. The woman became angry and threatened to blow up the school, saying ‘some kids will be missing,’ according to the affidavit. The mother then called back and spoke with the principal,” Fox 13 Memphis reported.
“The principal said she spoke with [the mom] earlier in the week about the missing backpack. The principal told her…not call and make threats to blow up the school,” the news outlet reported, adding that according to the affidavit, the woman “told the principal she only said some kids will be missing.”
Detectives reportedly verified the suspect’s phone number from the calls to the principal of Getwell Elementary School.
The suspect is identified by several news organizations as Loretta Clayton-Treadwell, 30.
In a separate incident, a Florida mom is now charged with making a bomb threat because she was allegedly dissatisfied with her kids’ portion sizes in the school cafeteria.
“A Cocoa Police probable cause affidavit states that on Feb. 3, a call was made to Cocoa High School, stating ‘If you don’t start feeding my mother f—ing children better at that b–ch I’m gonna come round that b–ch and blow that mother f—er up.’ School staff contacted [Brevard County sheriff] deputies and the school was evacuated. No explosives were found on campus,” Fox 35 Orlando reported.
As with the previous case, cops reportedly verified that the call was allegedly placed from the cell phone of suspect Anya Smith, 41, based on a review of school records.
The news outlet claims that Smith is the legal guardian of a student who got into an argument over extra food with a cafeteria worker on the same day.
“The officer in the report says he had numerous encounters with Smith in the past and that he recognized her voice on the voicemail to the school,” Fox 35 added.
The suspect reportedly faces two charges: making a false report to destroy state property, a felony, and interfering with school administrative functions, a misdemeanor. According to Brevard County Jail records, from which she has bonded out after a booking on Wednesday, no court date has yet been set.
All suspects are presumed innocent until or unless they are convicted in a court of law of any alleged crimes.
