Representative Cori Bush (D-MO), has been a vocal critic of the police and a prominent voice in the “de-fund the police” movement, but that hasn’t stopped her from spending lavishly on private security for herself.

According to Fox News, which sifted through the Federal Election Commission filings, Bush spent $70,489 on personal security services in the period between January 1st and March 31st of this year. The breakdown of the payments is $50,489 to Peace Security, $15,000 to Cortney Merrits, and $5,000 to Nathaniel Davis. Bush has dished out more than $300,000 in total towards her personal security during the election cycle, certainly far more than the average taxpayer can afford.

Bush has also remained insistent in her calls to de-fund the police and has even doubled down on such talk. Meanwhile, her fellow Democrats, perhaps reading the room (and polls,) have become conspicuously silent on the issue, quietly backing off of such talk ahead of the midterm elections in November. In fact, her fellow Democrats have told her to pipe down, which Bush has defiantly refused to do.

“I always tell [other Democrats], ‘If you all had fixed this before I got here, I wouldn’t have to say these things,'” said Bush to Axios.

The Missouri Democrat isn’t worried about the issue costing Democrats in the elections, which many are predicting to be a serious defeat for Democrats, and told Axios she’s sticking to her guns, instead blaming any electoral losses on other issues:

“‘Defund the police’ is not the problem. We dangled the carrot in front of people’s faces and said we can get it done and that Democrats deliver, when we haven’t totally delivered.”

Bush has been critical even of the most prominent fellow Democrat, President Joe Biden, for not being vocal enough on black lives and police:

In regards to her usage of expensive private security, costing many times more than most Americans make in a year, which includes sheriff’s deputies hired at public expense, Bush has been unapologetic. Bush cited threats to her life as the need for so much security, while simultaneously demanding that public security funds be slashed.
