‘Fake, Republican scandal’: Media Matters ripped for ‘weak ploy’ attempt to smear Herridge’s report on Hunter Biden

The self-appointed fact-checkers over at Media Matters for America have set their eyes on CBS News Senior Investigative Correspondent Catherine Herridge for promoting “a fake Republican-driven scandal from when Joe Biden wasn’t even in office,” despite recent confirmations from The New York Times and The Washington Post that the information contained on Hunter Biden’s infamous “laptop from hell” is authentic.

Following a Thursday news segment on “CBS Mornings” in which Herridge, formerly of Fox News, discussed the investigation led by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) into Hunter Biden’s business dealings, Media Matters blasted Herridge, calling her “a mouthpiece for fake Republican outrage” and accusing her of contributing “to the fabrication of a political scandal.”

At issue for Media Matters is the investigation’s look into business deals made by Hunter and James Biden, President Joe Biden’s brother, in 2017 and 2018 — a time when Donald Trump was President and Joe Biden was out of office.

“Thus, the two men could not have plausibly had any political influence to sell, even if they’d wanted to,” Media Matters states.

Furthermore, Media Matters claims, “The insinuations that the Biden family were influence-peddling also lace a key ingredient: Herridge and Grassley cannot point to any policy decisions supposedly influenced by these business ventures — which would, of course, have been completely impossible during those years.”

In the segment, Herridge brought up former President Trump’s continued ownership of his businesses while in office and noted that “China awarded Ivanka Trump’s fashion brand new trademarks while she was a senior advisor to her president father” — a point one would expect the liberal-leaning Media Matters to applaud. Instead, it dismissed the point as “a disingenuous comparison” that compared “this fake scandal to a real one.”

“In that case, obviously, Ivanka Trump was making foreign business deals while her father was president, and while she was working in the White House herself,” Media Matters states. “By comparison, Hunter Biden was making business deals while his father did not hold any public office at all and it seemed unlikely that he ever would again.”

“Somehow,” Media Matters adds, “Herridge thinks these two things are equivalent.”

But what Media Matters fails to address at all are the tens of millions of dollars the Biden family has allegedly received from “Chinese elites” and the implications of Grassley’s findings on today’s America.

As American Wire News reported earlier this week, author Peter Schweizer has detailed transactions valued at $31 million with Chinese businessmen who have demonstrable ties to the Chinese Communist Party, and Senator Grassley is concerned the lucrative deals may have opened a door to Biden blackmail opportunities now that Joe Biden is — however “unlikely” it may seem to many — President of the United States of America.

“What I and Senator Johnson have done at this point is bring out the facts and the bank records that prove that there was a close relationship between Hunter Biden, maybe James Biden, and business people in China that have close contacts with the Communist Party and with the military there,” Grassley told Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom” on Monday. “And, so, what’s concerning to us, we release all these documents. What’s concerning to us is — is there any sort of blackmail opportunity for China against the United States because of those close working relationships?”

Not only did Media Matters fail to acknowledge the authenticity of the information gleaned from Hunter Biden’s laptop, it didn’t even bother to deny that the numerous shady deals — punctuated by introductions by Hunter to his father in China while the elder Biden was absolutely in office (father and son rode to Beijing aboard Air Force Two) — occurred.

Luckily, many on social media have seen straight through Media Matters’ attempt to smear Herridge and dismiss the Hunter Biden investigation as a Republican conspiracy theory.
