With the flick of a pen, Kristi Noem signs EO that takes aim at CRT in schools

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is taking steps to prevent “divisive concepts” such as Critical Race Theory (CRT) from being taught in her state’s schools.

On Tuesday, she signed an executive order that is effectively a ban on CRT in K-12 schools, despite the fact that the term isn’t actually mentioned anywhere in the bill. In fact, it is directly aimed at the Department of Education, as the school districts are in charge of much of the curriculum.

“Political indoctrination has no place in our classrooms,” a statement from Noem reads. “Our children will not be taught that they are racists or that they are victims and they will not be compelled to feel responsible for the mistakes of their ancestors. We will guarantee that our students learn America’s true and honest history – that includes both our triumphs and our mistakes.”

The state’s Senate Education Committee, which is Republican-led, rejected a similar bill proposed by Noem in early March, but did pass a bill in regards to the university system. It seeks to ban training that creates “discomfort” on the basis of race.

The ACLU is not pleased with Noem’s use of executive orders to further her agenda, claiming that she is simply “skirting” the traditional legislative process.

Social media reaction was mixed, as the topic of CRT in education is highly debated on both sides of the political aisle:
