Senate Republicans seek to use COVID relief package as leverage to thwart looming border disaster

Senate Republicans are seeking to tie a new $10 billion COVID relief package to the Biden administration’s ending of Title 42, the emergency health order to control the spread of the virus by allowing the quick expulsion of illegal immigrants seeking asylum.

An agreement on the bipartisan bill that includes funding for vaccines and therapeutics was struck on Monday, less than President Joe Biden had asked for but still a win for the White House as the Senate seeks to complete the process prior to their upcoming two-week vacation.

The Democrat leadership’s desire for the deal to be done provides some leverage for GOP senators to push for an amendment vote on Title 42 after several Democrats broke ranks to speak out against the lifting of the order which is expected to result in a swarm of migrants overwhelming resources at the border once it officially ends in May.

“It seems like there’s kind of critical mass behind that idea. How the Democrats want to handle that issue may have some bearing on how and when the COVID bill proceeds,” said South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the chamber’s number two Republican.

Thune is hoping that the desire to quickly pass the relief bill will make the opposition party open to negotiation to allow an amendment, with the Senate at 50-50 and the reaction by some Dem senators over the CDC’s decision that the restrictions were “no longer necessary,” giving the green light to Biden to end Title 42 as progressive activists have been demanding.

One of the Democrats speaking out was Sen. Joe Manchin who has been an obstacle to the most extreme elements of Biden’s transformational agenda including the “Build Back Better” package that would help to pave the way for the green utopia of leftists.

“Today’s announcement by the CDC and the Biden Administration is a frightening decision,” Sen. Manchin said in a statement.

“Title 42 has been an essential tool in combatting the spread of COVID-19 and controlling the influx of migrants at our southern border. We are already facing an unprecedented increase in migrants this year, and that will only get worse if the Administration ends the Title 42 policy,” he warned.

“We are nowhere near prepared to deal with that influx,” he said. “Until we have comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform that commits to securing our borders and providing a pathway to citizenship for qualified immigrants, Title 42 must stay in place.”

Other Democrats who came out against the lifting of the emergency order included Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire who said, “Ending Title 42 prematurely will likely lead to a migrant surge that the administration does not appear to be ready for.”

Also speaking out were Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Sen. Mark Kelley of Arizona who issued a statement prior to the CDC’s announcement.

“This is the wrong decision. It’s unacceptable to end Title 42 without a plan and coordination in place to ensure a secure, orderly, and humane process at the border,” said Kelley who is up for reelection this year.

Republicans would need to persuade at least one Democrat to cross party lines to send a message to the White House on Title 42. They will also need a favorable decision from the Senate parliamentarian on whether an amendment would qualify for a simple majority vote if it is allowed by Dem leadership.

  1. Our border is being invaded by at least 18,500 illegals 24/7-365 and nothing is being done- Border agents just let them in and then Biden admin ships them all over the country-where they end up homeless or on welfare, in our inner cities barrios and ghettos – adding to all those problems. This country does not need millions of uneducated, unskilled people who cannot even speak our language-and get all sorts of money and benefits from the taxpayer. The GOP should ALL travel to the Border and highlight the problem, but will not- so nothing is being done to stop this invasion-except cheap talk.

  2. I think if we were to have a more honest means of supporting bills, proposed laws, or “enactments” they should be contrived and presented totally anonymously so there is no clue as to which “side” has proposed them and see who would support and why ~ The good ideas would move forward and the bad would fall… But what a pipe dream fantasy that is!

  3. I have no faith in our government. These are the last days of America as we knew it. The migrant invasion is by design.

  4. GOP RINO SWAMP RAT eunuchs are about 1 1/2 years & $8 trillion too late, with this bright idea.
