U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-Fl.) put his full support behind rumblings that the Florida legislature is angling to repeal special privileges Disney has enjoyed since the late 1960s in light of Mickey Mouse’s parent company vowing to work to repeal the Parental Rights in Education Act, which has been largely mischaracterized as the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” by corporate media.
“Things that scare Disney: Municipal dissolution, Copyright expiration, Combined reporting,” Gaetz wrote on Twitter. “I’m the former Finance & Tax Chairman of the Florida House and I know of what I speak. DMs open for FL legislators.”
“I’ll tell you how to trap this rodent,” he added.

His post included a link to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) recent comments condemning the woke ideology being pushed at Disney and explaining why the legislature is considering repealing the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which essentially allows Disney to operate its own city and put its own regulations on virtually everything including building codes, fire department services, electricity, roads, and water.
“They have gotten incredible treatment from the Florida legislature and are treated on a pedestal, this one corporation is treated differently than anybody else,” DeSantis noted. “That is not something I’ve ever supported. In the legislature, you see a move to reevaluate the special privileges.”

Florida state Rep. Spencer Roach (R) also spoke out on social media in support of repealing the preferential act and indicated that he and his peers had already met twice to discuss it.
“Yesterday was the 2nd meeting in a week w/ fellow legislators to discuss a repeal of the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which allows Disney to act as its own government. If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County.”

Responses on social media were divided, and not everyone was on board with DeSantis and Gaetz seeking equal protection under the law for Disney. Here is a sampling of the reactions:
In other words, do you want to use the power of the government to hurt someone because of their political speech. I think there may be a law against that.

It’s so odd that Disney chooses this hill to die in, ostracizing a significant portion of their customer base -including the right, many independents, and some normal democrats. Let kids be kids, why the intentional backwards conversion therapy. Earn a bonus for each one or what?

I pray the up and move. Good for them protecting what they believe. It’s ok to be different

I wish Disney would shut its doors, pack up and leave! There are certainly other southern states that would welcome them! Take their revenue and walk away!

You do realize that a lot of money in Florida comes from Disney right? I mean the main reason you don’t need a state tax is because tons of people visit Disney. You may not want to disturb the giant.
