Eric Church fans have whistled the country music star for a hard foul after he announced the abrupt cancelation of a concert this weekend so that he could attend the Final Four men’s college basketball championship.
Church, who’s a die-hard fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, left ticket holders for Saturday’s scheduled concert at San Antonio’s AT&T Center holding the bag, choosing to stiff his paying fans so that he could be in attendance as his beloved team faces off against the archrival Duke Blue Devils in New Orleans with the winner’s ticket being punched to next Monday’s title game.
Fans who had bought tickets and made plans to see one of Church’s epic live shows got the bad news through an emailed statement from Ticketmaster which informed them that the sold-out stop on The Gather Again Tour had been called off along with a personal message to the “Church Choir” from the singer-songwriter.
“This Saturday, my family and I are going to stand together to cheer on the Tar Heels as the team has made it to the Final Four,” the notice quotes Church.
“As a lifelong Carolina basketball fan, I’ve watched Carolina and Duke battle over the year but to have them matchup in the Final Four for the first time in history of the NCAA Tournament is any sports enthusiast’s dream,” trying to explain the rationale behind his decision.
“This is the most selfish thing I’ve ever asked the Choir to do: to give up your Saturday night plans with us so that I can have this moment with my family and sports community,” he added, admitting his selfishness to the jilted fans. “However, it’s that same type of passion felt by the people who fill the seats at our concerts that makes us want to be part of a crowd at a game of this significance.”
“Woody Durham always said, ‘Go where you go and do what you do,’ thanks for letting me go here and be with the Tar Heels,” Church said, referring to the beloved UNC announcer who passed away in 2018 and thanking the thousands of stunned fans who shelled out their hard earned cash for tickets to the San Antonio show.
Adding insult to injury, the email informed ticket buyers that they may have to wait up to 30 days to get their money back.
Twitter users angrily responded to what one described as “one heck of a d*ck move” by Church.
I like Eric Church but this is one heck of a dick move. People had non-refundable travel plans booked. Yikes. Seriously selfish. https://t.co/vRZ9EyG1b1

😂 holy fuck, what a douchebag move by Eric Church. Dude cancelled his show Saturday so he can go to the UNC/Duke game. People likely had flights, hotels, and whatever else that isn't refundable booked. Really hoping he sees half empty venues from here on out. #Douchebag

Eric Church didn’t cancel when his whole band had covid but he did cancel for a basketball game 😭 ngl I’d be pisssssssed if I had those tickets

I’m a NC native like Eric Church and I love his music but I think given the state of our country right now it’s not the time to cancel your fans for a basketball game. That concert is probably the most enjoyable thing those fans have had to look forward to in a while!

Eric Church cancels his San Antonio gig for a basketball game and we’re supposed to be cool with it? How about you refund my fucking airfare and condo rental too? Four day vacation you just shit on because you’re selfish. Asshole move. Get a DVR and go @DukeMBB pic.twitter.com/PFNrLp8k3I

If Eric Church is such a big UNC fan, why did he schedule a concert on the Final Four weekend? Did he assume they wouldn’t be playing? Doesn’t sound like a fan. He’s weak. He’s a poser. He’s an embarrassment.

If Eric Church really believed in the Tar Heels, he would have never scheduled a show during the Final Four to begin with.

Eric Church is throwing words like "family" into his BS excuse for canceling a concert thousands of peopme were looking forward to…..for an important basketball game. Dude thinks a lot of himself for someone who sh**s on his fans.

Foo Fighters is cancelling concerts because their drummer died. Eric Church is cancelling a concert because he’d rather watch a basketball game.

Others who probably didn’t have tickets to the canceled gig were more sympathetic
People need to stop hating on the GOAT of Country Music.. tons of artists cancel shows for stupid AF reasons… not an absolute dream game of a UNC Fan lol https://t.co/8NAnO9GQPX

I LOVE Eric Church cancelling a concert to go to the final four. More people need to take a page out of his book. Nothing is bigger than sports

Eric Church is calling in sick to work to watch a huge sporting event like millions of us do each year. I love the outrage. Go get a 12 pack. Turn on your big screen. Play Eric Church music on YouTube. Problem solved

UNC and Duke are set to tip off at 8:49 pm ET with the victor facing either the Kansas Jayhawks or the Villanova Wildcats for all the marbles.
