As expected, squishy moderate Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) broke with the Republican Party and announced on Tuesday that she plans to vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, cementing her place on the high court despite GOP opposition.
The decision was made by Collins following a second personal meeting with Jackson Tuesday after the nominee met with a number of other swing-vote Republicans. Collins is the only one to announce her support for Jackson so far.
“After reviewing Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s extensive record, watching much of her hearing testimony, and meeting with her twice in person, I have concluded that she possesses the experience, qualifications, and integrity to serve as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court. I will, therefore, vote to confirm her to this position,” Collins announced in an emailed statement to the Washington Examiner.
“Judge Jackson has sterling academic and professional credentials. She was a Supreme Court clerk, a public defender, a respected attorney, and a member of the Sentencing Commission,” Collins noted.

In a telling move, she first told the New York Times about her decision to support Jackson before releasing a statement.
Collins was courted by Jackson for her confirmation. The senator was one of three Republicans who had previously voted to confirm her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The other two senators were Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
Graham is a hard “no” on the confirmation. Murkowski has not committed one way or the other yet and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) has not given his decision either. The full Senate vote on the confirmation will take place on April 11.
Romney met with Jackson on Tuesday as well and said they “had a wide-ranging discussion about her experience and qualifications. Her dedication to public service and her family are obvious, and I enjoyed our meeting,” according to NBC News.

Graham was very vocal during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings last week, decrying President Joe Biden’s nomination of Jackson over federal Judge J. Michelle Childs, who was a contender for the Supreme Court nomination. Graham believes she would have gotten bipartisan support among Republicans.
Collins claims that she is reassured that Jackson will not be “bending the law to meet a personal preference” and that she met the prerequisite of her standards to serve on the highest court. She said this despite the judge’s blatant leftist leanings as exposed during her confirmation hearings.

“In my view, the role under the Constitution assigned to the Senate is to look at the credentials, experience, and qualifications of the nominee. It is not to assess whether a nominee reflects the individual ideology of a senator or would vote exactly as an individual senator would want,” Collins said overlooking the fact that many contend that is the problem… that Jackson lacks the qualifications to sit on the high court and her rulings are suspect.
“This approach served the Senate, the Court, and the Country well,” Collins disingenuously said. “This is the approach that I plan to continue to use for Supreme Court nominations because it runs counter to the disturbing trend of politicizing the judicial nomination process.”
Jackson is now virtually assured of securing her spot on the high court with the backing of Collins. The Democrats hold a slim majority in both Houses and would have probably prevailed without Collins’ support in the matter but now there is no doubt that Jackson will ascend to the Supreme Court. Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin has also said he will vote “yes” on the nomination.

The republicans (Trump) should have nominated a qualified black female. They knew the democrats were going to do it if they got in power. The republicans are playing basketball while the democrats are playing hockey. The republicans missed a great opportunity to take the thunder from the democrats and to go down in history for this instead of the democrats.
To win the game you have to play the same game as the democrats on certain things.
I wonder if Collins remembers how Biden voted when it came to candidate Janice Rogers-Brown! A female black candidate which was nominated by a republican President, and Biden voted against her.
I don’t know how anyone can vote for anybody to a lifetime position, when that person doesn’t answer the questions. It seemed she was either over coached or too ignorant to be able to answer. One of the qualifications for her nomination was that she had to be a female, and she couldn’t even answer that question.
She had to be a qualified black female according to Biden but we know the main qualifier was black female.
This whole thing is so RACIST. To select a candidate based on solely on race (black in this case) and gender (female in this case) is RACIST. Of course Slo Joe is wrong and Jackson should denounce and decline the nomination based on racial grounds. But of course she will not because she has zero integrity.
True however; the democrats knows how to play this game well and that is why they have won more presidential elections than republicans. The democrats play hockey and the republicans play tennis.
