A viral video has been making the rounds showing Ukrainians prepping for an attack on Odesa by Russian forces, slinging sandbags into fortifications while jamming out to rocker Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” with their flag in the background and a drummer pounding away to the song.

The sandbags are being thrown into a truck along the shore. Men can be seen working frantically to build as big and as strong a defense as they can before the Russians start bombing and firing on them. Ukrainians have bravely vowed the city will not fall to Russia and none of their cities, including devastated Mariupol, will surrender to Putin.

Bon Jovi evidently loved the video and retweeted it. He saluted the Ukrainians in his tweet, referring to his classic anthem in the message.

“This is for the ones who stood their ground… Odesa, Ukraine. #SlavaUkraini,” he wrote.

Many have fled the city as the Russians approach but men are staying to fight the enemy and to protect their homes.

Odesa authorities reported on Monday that airstrikes had hit apartment blocks in the city’s outskirts. There were no casualties but a fire broke out. Kyiv is still being heavily bombed.

Ukraine also turned down an offer from Moscow’s military to open two humanitarian corridors out of Mariupol, one leading eastward into Russia and the other north to Ukrainian-held territory, in exchange for surrender according to The Guardian. Russia has reportedly violated every humanitarian corridor agreed to so far.

Ukraine’s deputy prime minister Iryna Vereshchuk was adamant and proclaimed there is “no question of any surrender, laying down of arms” in Mariupol, which is another key port.

Ukraine’s defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, declared that the “superhuman courage” of Mariupol’s defenders was helping to save “tens of thousands of lives” in other cities such as Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa.

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are trapped in Mariupol. Many have been without water, heat, or power, for three weeks. Officials report that at least 2,300 citizens have died.

Reporters from Reuters who made it to Mariupol on Monday described it as an “apocalyptic wasteland” with bodies lying on the street wrapped in blankets, windows blasted out of burned apartment blocks, and groups of men digging graves by the roadside, calling it “ashes of a dead land.”

Fighters in Odesa are determined that their city will not meet the same fate.

The US is considering sending more troops to Europe but they will not be of help to the courageous Ukrainians. President Joe Biden is currently en route to Brussels for a meeting at NATO headquarters. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced on Tuesday that more sanctions will be leveled against Russia.

“He will join our partners in imposing further sanctions on Russia and tightening the existing sanctions to crack down on evasion and to ensure robust enforcement,” announced Sullivan at a briefing. No specifics were given.

Biden will travel to Poland on Friday to meet President Andrzej Duda but he will not go to Ukraine during the visit. The meeting follows the US refusing to allow Poland to be the intermediary in transferring MiG fighter jets to Ukraine. The Biden administration ostensibly feared escalating the conflict and forcing NATO and the United States into a world war.
