Teachers’ union leaders mocked for virtue-signaling photo featuring upside-down Ukraine flag

In a very public epic-fail moment displaying impressive incompetence, two teachers’ union leaders attempted to virtue-signal support for Ukraine by posing with posters featuring the war-torn nation’s flag and stating “We Stand with Ukraine” only to be informed the flag was upside-down.

The poster reads, “We stand with Ukraine, AFL-CIO.” Considering the mistake made, this is not a great advertisement for teachers or their unions.

The egregious mistake was posted on Twitter for all to see and critics proceeded to dogpile the teachers’ union officials for it. They were quick to correct the faux pas but it was really too late for that. Everyone saw it and had a field day with the goof. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the second-largest teachers’ union in the United States, was mercilessly trolled for the misstep.

“AFT President [Randi Weingarten] and [AFT Executive Vice President Evelyn DeJesus] stand with #Ukraine,” the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Twitter account proudly proclaimed Tuesday. Weingarten and DeJesus were featured in the photo holding a poster declaring support for Ukraine with an upside-down Ukrainian flag displayed as the background.

The Ukrainian flag is blue on top of yellow, not yellow on top of blue. It is meant to symbolize a blue sky over wheat fields. The country is known as Europe’s breadbasket. Although, it should be noted, as far as symbology goes, the top-down, bottom-up and inside-out progressive metaphor works in connection to the teachers’ union.

People could not get over teachers’ union leaders making the moronic mistake and savaged them for it on social media.

Corey DeAngelis, who is the national director of research at School Choice Now, snarkily labeled the tweet “free advertising for school choice.”

“They did to that flag what they did to education these past two years… pretend they care, but really, they just made it upside down,” Reopen California Schools commented on Twitter.

“That’s the flag of Ukraine alright, upside down,” California State Senator Melissa Menendez also tweeted. “Shout out to the teachers union for this promotional piece on the importance of school choice though.”

Teachers’ unions are not popular these days. They have come under neverending and justified attack for the closure of schools during the pandemic and then their subsequent push back against reopening them. No one can forget the march to mask kids forever either. Then there are the school board meetings where parents have been abused for speaking out against Critical Race Theory and transgenderism. Added to that is the political activism in classrooms and in-teacher training that pushes social justice. It adds up to no one having much respect for teachers and especially for their unions currently.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was speechless at the utter ineptitude on display, “They actually printed this sign…with the flag upside down!”

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) nailed it, “AFT President @rweingarten is not an educator, she is a political hack. She endlessly masked our kids, celebrated when the FBI targeted concerned parents and now reveals that she doesn’t know how to fly a Ukrainian flag properly. America’s students deserve better.”

Another person on Twitter named Hamlet Garcia also hit it out of the park, “Stop the show” For more than half a century, #AFT and #Democrats have been in control of our schools, racially exploiting Blacks & Hispanics for political & monetary gain arresting those who dare seek a better education outside of their ZipCode, denying right to #SchoolChoice.”

The AFL-CIO posted a photo of its leaders with the flawed signs sporting the upside-down flags. Realizing their mistake, they later tweeted the same image and message but digitally altered it to show the flag right-side-up, according to Fox News. Strangely, the one that was correctly altered is no longer available on Twitter.
