Ukrainian activist Daria Kaleniuk publicly wept as she excoriated UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson over not doing more for her country, calling for the UK and NATO allies to declare a no-fly zone over Ukraine to stop Russia from bombing the nation into submission.

The exchange took place during a press conference in Warsaw, Poland as Johnson thanked Kaleniuk but bluntly told her that the United Kingdom could not do what she wanted for Ukraine.

Kaleniuk was at the press briefing representing the Anti-Corruption Centre. She told the prime minister that a number of her colleagues and family members were still in Kyiv and are terrified that the Russians will “shoot them.” She joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in calling for the no-fly zone because millions of citizens are at risk of dying if the Russian airforce starts bombing the country.

“Most of my family, most of my team members are still in Ukraine, in Kyiv, in Lviv,” Kaleniuk told Johnson. “A woman from my team is now Berezivka and she’s there with two kids. The Russian military is over there and she’s so much afraid that she will be shot. Kharkiv, the city where I was studying, was bombed today.”

“You’re talking about the stoicism of the Ukrainian people but Ukrainian women and children are in deep fear because of bombs and missiles coming from the sky,” she added. “The Ukrainian people are desperately asking for the West to protect our sky. We’re asking for a no-fly zone, we’re told it will trigger World War 3. But what is the alternative, Mr. Prime Minister?”

“Observe our children protecting NATO from missiles and bombs instead of playing? What’s the alternative to the no-fly zone? Britain guaranteed our security under the Budapest memorandum, so you’re coming to Poland, not to Kyiv. You’re not coming to Lviv because you’re afraid, because NATO is not willing to defend. Because NATO is afraid of World War 3 but it’s already started,” Kaleniuk asserted. “And these are Ukrainian children there taking the hit.”

“You are talking about more sanctions, but Roman Abramovich is not sanctioned. He’s in London. His children are not in the bombardments, his children are there in London. Putin’s children are in the Netherlands. In Germany. In mansions,” she wept referring to a Russian oligarch. “Where are all these mansions seized? I don’t see that.”

“My family members, my team members, are saying we are crying, we don’t know where to run. This is what is happening, prime minister,” Kaleniuk concluded as a military convoy approximately 40 miles long is north of Kyiv and there are fears that the city will be bombed and many will die during the brutal onslaught.

Johnson looked stunned as she let him have it. But in the end, claimed there was nothing he could do as the woman wept knowing Ukrainians would die because of it.

He told Kaleniuk that he was “acutely conscious that there is not enough that we can do, as the UK government, to help in the way that you want.”

“I’ve got to be honest about that,” Johnson stated and then made clear his opposition to NATO forces trying to establish air control over Russia above Ukraine.

“When you talk about the no-fly zone, as I said to [Ukrainian president] Volodymyr Zelenskyy… unfortunately the implication of that is the UK will be engaged in shooting down Russian planes, would be engaged in direct combat with Russia. That is not something that we can do or that we’ve envisaged. I think the consequences of that will be truly very, very difficult to control,” he said justifying inaction.

Johnson claimed Putin is “doomed to fail.”

“It will be extremely difficult for him to continue on the path that he is on,” he asserted. “In the meantime, as you rightly say, there is going to be a period of suffering for the people of Ukraine for which Putin and Putin alone is responsible. He’s taken a decision that many people around the world find absolutely inexplicable as well as inexcusable.”

“It will take time, I’m afraid, for us to come through this period. All we can do in the meantime is help people like your crew and your family to get out, to get to safety, help them with all the humanitarian support that we can provide, help them to come to the UK and we certainly will. But I cannot pretend to you that this is something the UK can fix by military means and I think it would be wrong of me to do so,” Johnson told her.

The Mirror is reporting that Kaleniuk told reporters following her plea to Johnson, “My message is that the suffering of people in Ukraine is unbelievable now.”

“My call to the West is protect our sky. It is insane that our sky is being protected by children who are taking the heat,” she stated.

She claimed Ukrainians were “taking guns with zero protection” to “fight the evil” of Russian troops.
