US retailers pulling Russian vodka from shelves; TX Gov. Abbott goes even further in support of Ukraine

Nationwide, retailers began to show their support for the people of Ukraine with their own kind of sanction, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) believes there is still more that can be done.

Over the weekend, businesses decided to pull Russian products from their shelves to support Ukraine. The main focus of this boycott has been halting the sale of Russian vodka and, while some purveyors are taking this action of their own accord, there have been instances where government officials have insisted on participation.

Jacob Liquor Exchange in Wichita, KS told KY3 that they made the decision Friday morning to pull three different vodkas off their shelves. Jamie Stratton, a partner of the store, said they’ve even dumped some of the Russian alcohol out to express their sincerity.

“We are removing all Russian vodkas until further notice,” Stratton said. “You know the sanctions on them. You know, this is a little sanction, in our opinion. And what they are doing is causing higher gas prices. We have delivery trucks, so it’s hitting our bottom line, hitting everyone’s bottom line.”

Though he wasn’t sure if it would have a serious impact, Stratton said he feels strongly about what’s happening and doesn’t know how it may escalate. “It’s not impacting us the way it’s impacting Ukraine, but in the long run, it’s aggressive and it’s causing a lot of problems across the world, and something needs to be done.”

Other states have a liquor control board and those organizations, in some cases at the behest of the governor, have elected to stop buying and selling Russian-made products.

This retail activism stretched north into Canada as well where the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, Steven Del Duca, called for a ban on Russian vodka in addition to the financial measures that the province has taken.

Del Duca stated, “We need to do everything we can to support our allies against the murderous dictator that has invaded Ukraine.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott shared those sentiments in his urging of Texans to voluntarily participate in a boycott.

Abbott’s urging of the Texas Restaurant Association, Texas Package Stores Association and all Texas retailers to cease the sale of Russian products was a follow up to an earlier message where he delineated between the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Biden’s administration.

Abbott has redoubled his efforts to promote American energy independence as the crisis has unfolded and spoke with Fox News on Thursday to emphasize the failings Biden has made since day one.

Abbott told Fox News host Sean Hannity that the denial of leases and shutdown of pipelines was already causing the price of oil to increase. Expressing concern that the price of gasoline would rise considerably in the coming days, Abbott stated, “If Biden would rely upon American-based energy we could solve that problem.”

The White House’s response to these concerns was meek over the weekend as press secretary Jen Psaki deflected against calls to revitalize America’s former energy independence, stating in part, “we need to look at other ways of having energy in our country and others.”

Additionally, the White House released a statement in conjunction with European leaders that they “are resolved to continue imposing costs on Russia that will further isolate Russia from the international financial system and our economies. We will implement these measures in the coming days.”
