South Carolina Dem defects to run as a Republican :‘It became apparent that I am not a Democrat’

The last elected Democrat in Dorchester County, South Carolina, County Councilwoman Harriet Holman, defected to the Republican Party on Monday, stating that it had become apparent that she was not a Democrat due to her conservative views.

The retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel is pro-life, pro-capitalism, and supports the police and points out that she has always stood for many of the same principles reflected in the Republican platform. She had been considering the switch for six months and finally decided it was time.

Appearing on Fox News Wednesday, Holman explained her move after being asked what the final straw was for her to ditch the Democrat Party. She was candid about it.

“Well, it’s just some things that I had looked at… um, that I just didn’t agree with any longer. And one of the things was I am just totally pro-life and I am for capitalism and I am for funding the police and so those things are what made me make my final decision,” she stated.

Holman was first elected to Dorchester County Council in 2019 as a Democrat. With her defection, the council is now entirely Republican. All other elected county offices are held by Republicans as well.

“I have never been political, and through my time in the military, I did not give my party affiliation much thought,” Holman said in a video released earlier this week. “So when I ran for county council … I ran as a Democrat because that is what you were supposed to do.”

During the Fox News interview, she expanded on that sentiment, “I think that you know, when we are born, we’re born into our families, and we kind of take on the trait of what our families are. And my parents were Democrats and so, that’s what I was. It was never even thought or considered about changing to the Republican Party. But as I, you know, retired from the military and started getting more involved in my community and started seeing things that were just not quite like I thought they should be, um… I decided to make a switch.”

“It wasn’t an easy decision. I talked to family. I talked to friends. I talked to some of my constituents. And a lot of my family members are really Republicans as well. So, was not too hard of a transition at all. And now that I’ve done it, I am very much at ease with it. Very much happy with my decision and I’m enjoying being a Republican for the last 24 hours,” she added.

“It became apparent that I am not a Democrat,” said Holman on Monday. “Nationally, the Democratic Party does not represent who I am.”

Changing her affiliation, Holman claimed, “does not change who I am at all.”

“I have talked to my constituents and one thing that my constituents know is that I am still Harriet Holman,” Holman told WCSC. “There’s an ‘R’ behind my name but I still work and am a servant for the people in Dorchester County.”

Switching parties has become a trend for Democrats in county offices across South Carolina since 2018. Four other Democrats have defected to the GOP. That includes longtime Darlington County Clerk of Court Scott Suggs, who in June said he’d been considering switching parties for years due to what he characterized as shifts in the Democratic Party that made it “unrecognizable.”

Republicans control both legislative chambers in South Carolina, all statewide elected offices, and all but one congressional delegation seat.

State GOP Chairman Drew McKissick told  The Washington Times that the defections are indicative of a deepening conservatism, crediting excitement surrounding former President Donald Trump’s continued popularity in South Carolina.

McKissick also suggested on Monday that frustrations with Democrat leadership in Washington could be prompting disaffected Democrats to switch parties.

“After a year of Joe Biden in the White House and a Democrat-controlled Congress, it’s no surprise more and more people are switching to the Republican Party,” he remarked. “Between sky-high inflation, multiple foreign policy disasters, a surge at our southern border, and a spike in crime, we’ve seen the failures and crises caused by Democrat leadership on full display.”

“The message matters. The more people that are exposed to our message the better we are going to do,” McKissick told WCSC. “A few weeks ago we had an African American conservative businessman winning our nomination for a senate primary up in Florence County. In a couple weeks, we expect he will be elected to the state senate. All across the state our party is getting more diverse because more people are being exposed our ideas and our principles and that leads to success at the ballot box.”
