AOC outrages LGBTQ community over renaming of post office: ‘How dare she…’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), equal-opportunity offender, outraged LGBTQ advocates, “Back the Blue” proponents, and those with an understanding of basic economics with proposals that show just how out of touch she is.

Last week, AOC reportedly began soliciting her constituents for suggestions on a new name for a post office in Jackson Heights, Queens, the Daily News reported. As explained by a spokesperson for the New York Democrat, it is not uncommon for members of Congress to engage their community through naming ceremonies. However, it appears that neither Ocasio-Cortez nor her representatives took the time to research the background for the current name of the Jeanne and Jules Manford Post Office Building.

The name was adopted in a ceremony in 2016 to honor Jeanne Manford, founder of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), who is celebrated as the first parent to openly support their child in an LGBTQ parade. The legislation designating the new name for the post office was co-sponsored by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and signed by President Barack Obama.

City Councilman Daniel Dromm (D-Queens), who worked to accomplish the name change, asked the obvious questions, “Is it that she doesn’t know our history? Did they not check to see who the post office is named after right now? Does she not know who Jeanne Manford was?”

Of course, she may not be the only one who didn’t bother to use a search engine before considering a name change. A member of the community suggested the post office should be renamed to honor LGBTQ activist Lorena Borjas. “You don’t take one pioneer of the LGBT movement and pit them against another,” decried Dromm.

LGBTQ activist Allen Roskoff, leader of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, professed his frustration as well, “How dare she put our community’s heritage up for a popularity contest or a vote. We are outraged.”

“This is typical of her not being connected to the community,” Dromm added. This wasn’t the only disconnect AOC demonstrated this past week as she took time to address funding proposals by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

The funding proposal that Ocasio-Cortez reacted to calls for an overall decrease of $215 million for the fiscal year as enrollments have continued to decline, Spectrum News reported. One public school alone saw a decrease of the student population by eight percent in Brooklyn. Ocasio-Cortez calls this “financial scrutiny & performance auditing” when it is simply a matter of funds reflecting the number of students.

AOC was called out for her lack of understanding of the pressures on law enforcement.

The novel idea that a congresswoman actually take steps to address a perceived problem in their community rather than pontificating on social media did not go unnoticed.

Of course, maybe if Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t spending so much time getting involved in the politics of other states, she might have a clue as to what was going on in her own neighborhoods. Maybe.
