U.S. Surgeon General admits ‘nothing’ can eliminate risk, offers pep talk after getting COVID: ‘Don’t beat yourself up’

Fully vaccinated and boostered Surgeon General Vivek Murthy announced on Friday that he has tested positive for COVID-19 just days after his 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with the virus, telling Americans “nothing” can eliminate risks altogether.

“When you’ve been as safe as you can, getting COVID-19 can be frustrating and disappointing. I’ve felt that. It can also be a source of shame. Many people assume you must have been careless to get sick. Our safety measures reduce risk but they can’t eliminate risk. Nothing can,” he tweeted.

“So if you’ve done everything you can and gotten COVID-19 anyway, don’t beat yourself up. A lot of us are doing the best we can. And let’s not assume those who get sick are careless. We don’t know people’s circumstances. They may not be able to protect themselves the way we can,” Murthy added.

“One major source of peace of mind for us: we and our son are vaxed/boosted. Vaccines are very effective at saving our lives and keeping us out of the hospital. As parents, I can’t tell you how reassuring it is to know we’ll be able to care for our kids even if we get infected,” the surgeon general remarked, justifying the jab.

He explained that both his son and daughter, as well as his wife and himself had all tested positive for COVID and are experiencing mostly mild symptoms.

“We’ve tried to be safe but it’s tough when your kids are sick. You want to comfort them when they’re unwell. That often requires being close physically. We’d make that choice again, but I feel for those who struggle to balance protecting themselves with caring for family,” Murthy stated.

Murthy’s 4-year-old daughter is too young to be vaccinated, and the timeline for authorization of the vaccine for that age group was recently pushed back to collect more data on a third dose. Murthy is frustrated by that state of affairs.

“I wish a vaccine was available for my child and for all kids <5,” he tweeted earlier this week. “It would protect kids and help parents. Unfortunately, more data is still needed from clinical trials for the FDA to make a full assessment. I know a safe, effective vaccine for <5s remains a top priority for them.”

“In that moment, especially, but even in the many months prior to that, I had wished that we had a vaccine for kids under five,” he told NPR. “Thankfully, we’ve got a vaccine for children five and up, and for all adults. These under kids under five, like my daughter, are the ones who still don’t have that protection. I wish we had that. But I also know that we need to make sure we have good data and that data is thoroughly assessed by the FDA.”

Last summer, Murthy advised parents with small children to wear a mask while at home amid rising cases of a new COVID variant that didn’t appear to be infecting kids at any appreciable rate.

“So the people that we’re most concerned about are the unvaccinated,” Murthy proclaimed at the time.

“For example, if you happen to have a lot of interaction with folks who are unvaccinated, let’s say you’re a parent like me who has young children at home who are not vaccinated, that’s a circumstance where we’re being extra cautious and wearing that mask even if you’re fully vaccinated, wearing it outside, when you’re in indoor public locations, is an extra step to protecting those at home,” he claimed.

“So that’s why, especially when you have a lot of virus circulating in a community, it’s important to take that extra step, go that extra mile, wear that mask in indoor settings, outside the house, so you don’t contribute to transmission,” Murthy asserted.
