Putin to launch ballistic missiles in nuclear drill; Moscow reportedly claims 9,000 civilians died in Ukraine ‘genocide’

President Vladimir Putin will reportedly oversee a major nuclear drill on Saturday involving live-fire exercises of ballistic and cruise missiles that will include Russia’s aerospace forces, its strategic missile command, Northern and Black Sea fleets, and the Southern Military District.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin would observe the drills from the Defense Ministry’s situation room and supervise the practice missile launches himself, according to ABC News.

The exercises will take place around Crimea and the Black Sea, according to the Kremlin, and will cover Crimea and part of the border close to rebel-held areas in Ukraine. The exercise of Russia’s nuclear forces follows a series of major drills that the Russian military held near Ukraine and in Belarus.

These exercises are held by Russia every year, but this time they have been moved up. They are intended to test the “readiness” of commanders and troops as well as “the reliability of weapons of strategic nuclear and non-nuclear forces” and will include the launch of “ballistic and cruise missiles,” Moscow’s defense ministry said on Friday. Many contend that the drill may provide cover for an invasion of Ukraine.

Experts are predicting that the first phase of a Russian invasion will include ballistic missile attacks on border areas, military bases, infrastructure, and major cities, according to the Daily Mail.

The announcement coincides with Vice President Kamala Harris and other leaders meeting at the Munich Security Conference that begins on Friday and will go through the weekend. Russia will not be in attendance at the conference for the first time in years.

Comparisons to the 1938 Munich Agreement, which was an attempt at appeasing Hitler’s Germany and subsequently failed to avert the Second World War, are rampant.

Putin will instead meet Friday with Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk where thousands of troops are staging joint drills at military bases. Lukashenko is suggesting that his country’s constitution be changed allowing nuclear weapons to be stationed there.

Russia is accusing Ukraine of genocide in the Donbas region, according to the Daily Mail. Leaders are asserting that Putin may try and use that as an excuse for invasion. Thursday night at the UN, Russia presented papers alleging 9,000 civilians, including 126 children, have been killed by Ukrainian forces, the DM reported but noted the claim had not yet been verified.

According to Britain’s Ministry of Defense, over half of Russia’s troops near Ukraine have been moved to within 30 miles of the border. Ukraine is reporting that Russian forces number 149,000 while the US is stating that number could be as much as 190,000.

A report from Britain’s Ministry of Defense also claims that Putin has amassed troops on Ukraine’s northern border in a way that “directly threatens Kyiv, the capital.” It lays out a series of possible routes Russian soldiers could take in an invasion that would seize much of the eastern part of the country. The report also warned of “considerable” civilian casualties and that Putin “would be willing” to sustain those losses “to get what he wants.”

President Joe Biden declared on Thursday that there is every indication that Russia is now planning to invade Ukraine in the next few days. He is bluntly asserting that they are preparing a pretext to justify the invasion after Ukrainian forces and pro-Moscow rebels traded fire in eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin accused Biden of stoking tensions and threatened unspecified “military-technical measures.”

“With an unprecedented deployment of troops on the border with Ukraine and Cold War demands, Russia is challenging fundamental principles of the European peace order,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in a statement.

The Ukrainian military and independent conflict monitors are reporting a large uptick in fighting along the frontlines between Kyiv’s forces and separatist rebels in the country’s east.
