California Republicans made a strong political statement from the Assembly floor on Thursday while seeking to end Governor Gavin Newsom’s State of Emergency by wearing masks that showed a recent image of him without a face covering.
The Democrat-controlled legislature voted to keep the State of Emergency order in place in Los Angeles despite the upcoming Super Bowl this weekend set to take place at SoFi Stadium. To highlight the ridiculousness of that move, Republicans wore masks featuring a photo of Newsom and basketball legendMagic Johnson smiling and posing for the camera despite the governor’s own mask mandate.
“End the emergency, end all restrictions. Let’s let the people of California move on with their lives,” declared Republican Assembly Member Kevin Kiley.
On Tuesday, Feb. 15, the state plans to end its mask mandate.

Sweet masks, huh? We'd love for @GavinNewsom to explain how it's OK for him to ignore his own mandate and let CA host the #SuperBowl but his one-man rule must not be questioned. It's long past time we end the state of emergency. pic.twitter.com/mX6GABI6AG

Kiley introduced ACR 46, a concurrent resolution that would bring the State of Emergency to an end, terminating the emergency powers granted to Newsom as a result of that proclamation.
“We have seen that the response to COVID-19, is handled better by local communities, as opposed to the state simply dictating everything, for 40 million people, really one person, the governor dictating things,” Kiley noted, according to ABC 10. “But we’ve now reached the point where it’s just become a point of absurdity, maintaining the State of Emergency.”
“California is about to host the Super Bowl, this coming weekend, one of the biggest events in the world, we have 70,000 fans in a stadium, and yet, we’re saying this is all going on during a state of emergency,” he added. “Clearly, any predicate for there to be a state of emergency has passed.”
The governor’s response to outrage over his going maskless with one of his heroes while telling everyone else they have to cover their face was that he was attempting to be “gracious,” according to Townhall.com.
“You’ll see the photo that I did take, Magic was kind enough, generous enough, to ask me for a photograph and in my left hand’s the mask and I took the photo,” Newsom attempted to explain. “The rest of the time I wore it as we all should, um — not when I had a glass of water — and I encourage everybody else to do so. And, uh, that’s it.”
“Yes, of course. I was trying to be gracious. I made a mis — I was trying to be gracious,” he said. “I took the mask off for a brief second but, no, I encourage people to continue to wear them.”
There were other photos and videos from the NFC Championship game that put his claim in doubt.

Newsom was not happy over the Republicans’ political statement and a spokesperson for the governor stated that elected officials ought to “stop with the political theatre.”
“Elected officials should focus on what best serves their constituents and stop with the political theatre. Apparently, they believe it would have been better to let Californians die and be turned away from care when hospitals reached capacity during the Omicron surge,” the spokesperson sneered, according to KGET.com.
Kiley reminded Newsom that even other Democratic governors have decided the emergency is over, “‘Apparently, Asm. Kiley and Asm. Gallagher believe it would have been better to let Californians die’ – Gavin Newsom. Apparently, someone forgot to tell him even other Democrat Governors say the emergency is over.”

Fox 40 reported that Republicans pointed to Democratic governors in other states like New Jersey and Colorado, that have dropped their public health emergency orders.
“Instead of deflecting governor, instead of vilifying myself and Mr. Kiley, do the right thing for your people and end the State of Emergency that is clearly a farce at this point,” Gallagher admonished.
