If you want to know why the Freedom Convoy protests against the Canadian government’s authoritarian COVID vaccine policies are so crucial, look no further than New Brunswick, where an unvaccinated father has just lost the right to see his three children.
According to a report from Canada’s CBC News, Justice Nathalie Godbout of the Court of Queen’s Bench ruled that the father posed too much of a threat to his immunocompromised 10-year-old child, and so, “with a heavy heart,” she dismissed the dad’s research as wrong-think and barred him from in-person contact with any of his kids.
“His own anecdotal research on such a highly specialized topic carries little to no weight in the overall analysis when measured against the sound medical advice of our public health officials,” wrote Godbout.
The parents of the children are divorced, but have shared custody of the kids since 2019.
It was the mother of the children who applied to the court last year for a change in the custody agreement, citing both the dad’s and his new wife’s refusal to be vaccinated.
Judge Godbout agreed, writing: “As the parents who are caring for [the child] 50 per cent of the time, in close quarters, unmasked and unvaccinated, they are well-positioned to transmit the virus to [the child] should they contract it, this despite their best efforts.”
Additionally, the court ruled the mother could vaccinate the children without approval from their father, now that Canada has made the vaccine available to kids as young as five years old.
According to the mother’s lawyer, Grant Ogilvie, the children have already received their first shots.
“She was ecstatic in some regards,” said Ogilvie. “But this isn’t a case where she wants to take the children away from their father. This is what’s best for the children, period. She’s acknowledged this is going to have an impact on the children, but said, ‘I have to do what’s best for them.”
And that means all three children will only be able to see their dad on Zoom calls.
This situation, one in which parents with differing views on the vax use their children as legal footballs, is playing out across Canada, and according to Ogilvie, this case will set a precedent for others.
And lest you think this is just a “Canada problem,” think again.
In August of last year, a Chicago judge barred divorced mother Rebecca Firlit from seeing her 11-year-old son.
According to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times, Cook County Judge James Shapiro, in a child support hearing held on Zoom, asked Firlit if she’d been vaccinated. When Firlit responded that she hadn’t been, the Judge “stripped her of all parenting time with her son until she gets vaccinated.”
“I’ve had adverse reactions to vaccines in the past and was advised not to get vaccinated by my doctor,” said Firlit. “It poses a risk.”
The judge later reversed his decision, but the incident proves the United States is not immune from such appalling court decisions.
