MI school district forced to deny wild rumor about potty accommodations for students identifying as ‘furries’

In a bizarre turn of events, a Michigan school superintendent was compelled to deny a rumor that he was providing litter boxes to students who “self-identified” as cats and dogs.

The claim came last month when Lisa Hansen asserted at a meeting of the Midland Public Schools Board of Education that the school district was providing litter boxes for “furries” – people who consider themselves partially animal in some way, and often tied in as a sexual fetish, the Daily Mail reported.

“So yesterday, I heard that a least one of our schools has – in one of the unisex bathrooms – a litter box for the kids that identify as cats, and I am really disturbed by that. And I will do some more investigation on that,” Hansen had said at the meeting on December 20.

This accusation went viral, and was shared by conservative social media such as the Libs of TikTok Twitter account, where it was watched at least 600,000 times:

It was even allegedly shared by the Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock on Thursday, whom the Daily Mail reported as tweeting, “Kids who identify as “furries” get a litter box in the school bathroom. Parent heroes will TAKE BACK our schools.” As of this writing, the tweet appears to have been deleted.

In response, Superintendent Michael E. Sharrow released an email to parents that was also posted to Facebook, saying it was “unconscionable” that he had to actually address such a bizarre rumor.

“It is unconscionable that this afternoon I am sending this communication, however, our Midland PS stakeholders may be confused about a false message/accusation that has resurfaced this week and is gaining traction in the social media realm,” Sharrow wrote.

“Let me be clear in this communication. There is no truth whatsoever to this false statement/accusation! There have never been litter boxes within MPS schools,” Sharrow continued. “It is such a source of disappointment that I felt the necessity to communicate this message to you.”

Hansen herself seemed almost as confused as the superintendent even as she accused the school board of placing litter boxes in classrooms, and explaining the bizarre Furry fetish:

“I’m still wrapping my brain around this a little bit. Yesterday I heard something and I was stunned, and today I am equally stunned and a little bit upset. Furious – I would even use that word. I want to talk about the fact that – and I know that this is going on nationwide, so it’s not just for this board – but the community needs to understand that the agenda that is being pushed through our schools is – just my opinion – but somewhat nefarious when it comes to some of the activities,” she said.

“Let’s talk about furries. It was addressed by a child a couple months ago that they’re put in an environment where there are kids that identify as a fury – a cat or a dog or whatever. So yesterday, I heard that a least one of our schools has in one of the unisex bathrooms a letterbox for the kids that identify as cats. And I am really disturbed by that. And I will do some more investigation on that,” she added.

Hansen’s comments drew some scattered applause from a few other audience members, and stunned, confused silence from the school board.

As the divisive culture wars over education rage in places like Loudoun County, Virginia, and elsewhere, over Critical Race Theory and trans ideology, it would appear that at least in Michigan, there is a false alarm about furries making inroads.
