Former President Donald Trump endorsed Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy in his bid for reelection but did so with one condition.
The 45th president announced Tuesday his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of the incumbent Republican governor – as long as he does not back Sen. Lisa Murkowski who “has been very bad for Alaska.”
‘Mike Dunleavy has been a strong and consistent Conservative since his time in the Alaska State Senate,’ Trump said in a statement through his Save America PAC.
“I was proud to endorse his first run for Governor, and I am proud to support his reelection, too. Alaska needs Mike Dunleavy as Governor now more than ever,” he added before noting the stipulation.
“He has my Complete and Total Endorsement but, this endorsement is subject to his non-endorsement of Senator Lisa Murkowski who has been very bad for Alaska, including losing ANWAR, perhaps the most important drilling site in the world, and much else,” the former president continued, referring to the moderate lawmaker who was one of seven Senate Republicans who voted in February to convict Trump in his impeachment trial.

“In other words, if Mike endorses her, which is his prerogative, my endorsement of him is null and void, and of no further force or effect!” Trump emphasized.
Murkowski faces a challenging reelection bid in the 2022 midterm elections. Her handling of issues in Alaska, her betrayal of Trump, and the fact that her GOP opponent, former Alaska commissioner of administration Kelly Tshibaka, was endorsed earlier this year by the former president, all put Murkowski on shaky ground.
Trump is reportedly set to host a fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, in February to help Tshibaka’s campaign. Meanwhile, Murkowski has the open support of Senate GOP leader Sen. Mitch McConnell as well as the National Republican Senatorial Committee. She vowed she would stand up to any outsiders trying to meddle in Alaska’s affairs.
“In this election, lower 48 outsiders are going to try to grab Alaska’s Senate seat for their partisan agendas. They don’t understand our state and frankly, they couldn’t care less about your future,” the senator said in a video announcing her reelection bid last month.
“I will work with anyone from either party to advance Alaska’s priorities and I will always stand up to any politician or special interest that threatens our way of life,” she added.

Murkowski has come under Trump’s skin on other occasions as well, earning the wrath of Republicans for reaching across the aisle to work with Democrats such as when she opposed the confirmation of Trump’s then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Murkowski completed her father’s term in theSenate after she was appointed to replace him in 2002 when he was elected governor.
Trump made it clear in his statement Tuesday that Dunleavy was the best choice for Alaska, highlighting “his handling of the virus, support of the Constitution—including the Second and Tenth Amendments—taking advantage of all the opportunities Alaska has to offer, and his strong pushback against the Liberal Biden Administration’s attempt to hurt our great Country.”
