Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) promised on Monday to move forward with Biden’s Build Back Better legislation, calling for a vote early next year despite Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) saying he will vote against it, all but ensuring the bill will fail.
“The Senate will, in fact, consider the Build Back Better Act, very early in the new year so that every Member of this body has the opportunity to make their position known on the Senate floor, not just on television,” Schumer vowed in a letter to his fellow Democrats, according to Reuters.
“We are going to vote on a revised version of the House-passed Build Back Better Act – and we will keep voting on it until we get something done,” Schumer declared in his letter.
The $1.75 trillion social spending bill has been in limbo as Democrats fight each other over the price tag, with progressives demanding no reduction or changes, and moderates such as Manchin and Sen. Kirsten Sinema (D-AZ) standing against the massive liberal pork-fest.

On Sunday, Manchin potentially sealed the legislation’s fate as he told Fox News he would not vote for the measure.
“I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. I just can’t” the senator said. “I’ve tried everything humanly possible. I can’t get there. This is a no.”

Biden promised progressive Democrats that if they supported the now-passed infrastructure bill, he would make sure the Build Back Better Act was passed as well. But without the votes of Manchin and Sinema that will most likely not happen. No Republican will vote for it which means all the Democrats in the evenly split Senate must support the legislation or it will die.
The socialist spending spree addresses issues such as climate change, child daycare, and a whole wish list of taxes and Democratic measures that would cripple the country and our economy. Democrats also believe if they don’t get this legislation to pass, it will scuttle their chances in the 2022 midterm elections, possibly handing over control of both houses of Congress to Republicans and turning Biden into a lame-duck president.
Manchin’s refusal to budge over the cataclysmic spending drew anger from the White House. Press secretary Jen Psaki stated on Sunday that the Biden administration would find a way to move forward with the legislation in 2022.

“Senator Manchin’s comments this morning on FOX are at odds with his discussions this week with the President, with White House staff, and with his own public utterances. Weeks ago, Senator Manchin committed to the President, at his home in Wilmington, to support the Build Back Better framework that the President then subsequently announced. Senator Manchin pledged repeatedly to negotiate on finalizing that framework ‘in good faith.'” Psaki said in her caustic statement.
“On Tuesday of this week, Senator Manchin came to the White House and submitted—to the President, in person, directly—a written outline for a Build Back Better bill that was the same size and scope as the President’s framework, and covered many of the same priorities. While that framework was missing key priorities, we believed it could lead to a compromise acceptable to all,” she added. “Senator Manchin promised to continue conversations in the days ahead, and to work with us to reach that common ground. If his comments on FOX and written statement indicate an end to that effort, they represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position, and a breach of his commitments to the President and the Senator’s colleagues in the House and Senate.”
Schumer also asserted that the Senate would consider voting rights legislation after returning from holiday recess in January. Then he threatened to change procedural rules if Republicans “continue to abuse the filibuster” to block the bill.
“If the right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, then how can we in good conscience allow for a situation in which the Republican Party can debate and pass voter suppression laws at the state level with only a simple majority vote, but not allow the United States Senate to do the same?” he wrote.
“I believe our constituents deserve to know which Senators choose to hide behind ill-conceived and abused rules and which Senators prefer to restore Senate floor procedures to better align with the Founders’ intentions,” he said in Monday’s letter.
“Members will be given the chance to debate on the Senate floor and cast a vote so that their choice on this matter is clear and available for everyone to see,” he warned.

Manchin and Sinema also oppose eliminating the filibuster and are a thorn in the Democrats’ side on that issue as well.
Manchin was lambasted by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the “Squad.” She called his reversal “an egregious breach” of Biden’s trust. She then told MSNBC that Democratic leaders must move quickly to deliver for constituents and urged the Senate to reconvene.
“We really need to start creating an environment of pressure,” she declared. “Make it tough.”
Biden needs to lean on his executive authority now. He has been delaying and underutilizing it so far. There is an enormous amount he can do on climate, student debt, immigration, cannabis, health care, and more.
