Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) bluntly told Democrats in a tweet that they are “actually delusional” if they believe they can get reelected in the 2022 midterm elections if President Joe Biden breaks his Build Back Better promise and they don’t act on student debt.
Ocasio-Cortez railed about progressive legislation being stalled in a Democrat-controlled Congress, pointing to liberal issues such as the Build Back Better Act, student loan debt, immigration, and the child tax credit.
“It is actually delusional to believe Dems can get re-elected without acting on filibuster or student debt, Biden breaking his BBB promise, letting CTC lapse, 0 path to citizenship, etc. Esp when they run from convos abt race+culture (which is what 1/6 was abt). We need to act now,” the young socialist contended.
It’s now looking like Biden’s Build Back Batter proposal is going to be delayed until 2022 and even then, there’s no guarantee it will ever get pushed through. Ocasio-Cortez and progressives know this and suspect that Biden will not keep his word to make sure it passes.

The child tax credit (CTC) will lapse at the end of December because of the delay. Currently, families making up to $150,000 a year are receiving a check for $300 per child under six years old, and a $250 check for each child between ages six and 17. That will come to a screaming halt if the Build Back Better Act is pushed off until 2022.
It also means that 43 million federal student loan borrowers will be resuming payments on their debt once the pandemic pause lifts on February 1, according to Business Insider.
“People want to ‘but Manchin’ everyone to death, but learned helplessness is not a disposition that inspires confidence or support,” Ocasio-Cortez admonished, referring to Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who stands nearly alone in opposition to the way the Child Tax Credit is structured in the bill. She has also been calling out Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) for obstructing the progressive agenda.
“The President has tools at his disposal. Leadership has tools at their disposal. If it really is just 1-2 votes, Senate should force a vote on BBB,” Ocasio-Cortez demanded.
Then the unabashed Democratic Socialist called for action from Biden.
“To secure votes for the Bipar Infra Bill, Biden *himself* came to House Progressives & told us was putting his credibility on the line to deliver BBB if CPC voted BIF. They trusted him. I didn’t think he could promise the Senate. He promised anyway. It’s time for him to deliver,” Ocasio-Cortez charged.

Fellow “Squad” member Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) chimed in on Manchin via Twitter, writing, “Families and children won’t get the child tax credit help they need next month because of Joe Manchin. I can’t believe it’s controversial to say this when he’s literally telling the press he intends to kill the CTC. The truth needs to be told. Enough.”

Another member of the notorious “Squad,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal, also tweeted on the passage of the Build Back Better Act, “The American people sent us to Congress to deliver. More than 81 million people voted for @POTUS’s agenda, 85% of which is contained in this bill. The House did our work, and now it’s time for the Senate to do theirs. They must stay in session until Build Back Better is passed.”

The Build Back Better legislation hit a snag on Thursday night when the Senate parliamentarian ruled that provisions related to illegal immigrants could not be included because they ran afoul of budget reconciliation process rules.
“Good thing the Parliamentarian’s guidance here is non binding! It’s just guidance,” snipped Ocasio-Cortez. “The Senate can still include a path to citizenship in BBB and call a vote on it, which is why we have called on them to do so.”
