Liz Cheney reads prepared statement concerning Trump that sounds a lot like a threat

Reading from a prepared statement that presumably was handed to her by a staffer on the Democrat-controlled J6 U.S. House investigation committee, self-righteous anti-Trump Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R – Wyo.) seemed to be threatening POTUS 45 with perjury charges.

[President Trump] “has recently suggested that he wants to debate members of this committee. This committee’s investigation into the violent assault on our Capitol on January 6 is not a game,” she declared during a committee hearing.

“When this committee convenes hearings, witnesses will be called to testify under oath. Any communications Mr. Trump has with this committee will be under oath. And if he persists in lying then, he will be accountable under the laws of this great nation and subject to criminal penalties for every false word he speaks,” Cheney added, which no doubt pleased her new friends on the left.

The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney prefaced her comment by lamenting that “President Trump continues to make the same false claims about a stolen election, with which he has misled millions of Americans.”

Like him or his content or not, in interviews and press releases while exercising his constitutional free-speech rights, the ex-president and possible 2024 candidate is not backing down on his insistence that the 2020 election was rigged, particularly given the extraordinary deployment of mail-in ballots.

“Cheney’s comments came at a business meeting where the panel forwarded its second referral for criminal contempt to the full House, in this case for Jeffrey Clark, a former Justice Department official who was central to Trump’s efforts to pressure the department to act on his baseless claims of voter fraud,” The Hill explained.

Steve Bannon has already been charged.

Trump has also consistently mocked what he describes as the “Unselect committee” that is probing the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, implying that it is just sham political theater. Efforts to subpoena him to testify would set up an interesting constitutional issue.

The wholly unlikely event that he would ever agree to appear voluntarily fits the definition of must-see TV on steroids if it came to pass. Obviously, no House committee member would go along with any kind of debate outside of the hearing room and its formal procedures.

Late last month, Trump opined that “Interesting to watch the Unselect Committee go after the gentleman at the Department of Justice who thought the Election was RIGGED, but not go after the people who did the RIGGING. Just look at the numbers that the Fake News does everything possible NOT to report. They are overwhelming!

“The Unselect Committee itself is Rigged, stacked with Never Trumpers, Republican enemies, and two disgraced RINOs, Cheney and Kinzinger, who couldn’t get elected ‘dog catcher’ in their districts. Kinzinger has already quit!” he added.

GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled official GOP participation from the committee after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) refused to seat U.S. Reps. Jim Banks and Jim Jordan.

Cheney and Kinzinger (R-Ill.) basically are on the panel as free agents after Pelosi picked the compliant Never Trump duo, which doesn’t say much for McCarthy’s authority, or lack thereof, over the Republican caucus, which also includes 13 members who voted with Democrats for Biden’s massive infrastructure spending package.

Cheney, who was made vice-chair of the J6 committee to give it a veneer of bipartisanship, had already been ousted from House leadership. The Cold War term “useful idiots” may apply to the two GOP lame-duck lawmakers in the context of their Trump vendetta.

The Wyoming Republican Party no longer recognizes Liz Cheney as a member of the GOP.

Journalist Mollie Hemingway has identified the incongruity by which neocon Liz Cheney is somehow operating as “the ranking member for the minority party while also being the vice-chair for the majority party.”

Congress has a perfect right to investigate the unrest that occurred on the day that Congress met to certify the election in all its dimensions.

If Cheney or Kinzinger were really trying to get to the bottom of things, and not just perhaps expecting a cushy gig on MSNBC or CNN, however, they would ask questions raised by Tucker Carlson and others such as what was the role of alleged federal informants or agitators in the event?

Or why did the House sergeant-at-arms, a Pelosi subordinate, allegedly deny the Capitol police chief’s repeated requests for National Guard backup when everyone knew a huge protest was coming. They also might seek the release of many hours of surveillance footage that is apparently being kept under wraps.

U.S. Rep. Cheney might also take a look at some of the alleged irregularities in voting procedures to see if there is any merit to Trump’s allegations rather than just accepting corporate media insistence that no “widespread” fraud was in play.

Separately investigating the perhaps insurrection-like civil disturbances that swept through America’s cities during the summer of 2020 might be a worthwhile agenda item, too.
