Biden gets shoved hard down memory lane after announcing African travel ban

President Joe Biden announced a travel ban on South Africa and seven other African countries on Friday in response to the spread of the COVID Omicron variant, seemingly forgetting that he called former President Trump’s travel ban racist and xenophobic in 2020.

“We are in the midst of a crisis with the coronavirus,” Biden tweeted while campaigning for the presidency last year the day after Trump imposed travel restrictions from China into the United States over the coronavirus. “We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.”

While campaigning, Biden continued to criticize Trump for his travel ban and for enacting another ban against travel in Europe.

Later, Biden would try and walk back his “xenophobic” comment, claiming it was a broad point about the issue and not aimed directly at the travel ban. “Banning all travel from Europe — or any other part of the world — will not stop it,” Biden warned, adding that “a wall will not stop the coronavirus.”

Biden called Trump out in March for saying his travel ban saved lives.

“Stop the xenophobic fear-mongering. Be honest. Take responsibility. Do your job,” he tweeted.

Trump issued a proclamation to extend his travel ban to six other countries that included Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania.

Biden and White House press secretary Jen Psaki would go on to disingenuously refer to that ban as a “Muslim” ban. Trump’s ban on those countries was due to concerns that individuals coming into the United States from those locations could not be properly vetted.

In February of 2020, Biden specifically condemned Trump’s expanded travel ban for security reasons, which included Africa.

“Trump further diminished the U.S. in the eyes of the world by expanding his travel ban,” Biden tweeted. “This new ‘African Ban,’ is designed to make it harder for black and brown people to immigrate to the United States.”

Fast-forward to today and Biden is now imposing his own ban on so-called “Muslim” countries in Africa due to the Omicron variant. Travel restrictions will apply to South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, and Malawi.

“As a precautionary measure until we have more information, I am ordering additional air travel restrictions from South Africa and seven other countries,” Biden said in a statement. He also told reporters in Nantucket that travel restrictions would be imposed.

The president claims there are no new mandates being considered, but a number of blue states have already made moves in that direction during a time when the nation can ill-afford more disastrous pandemic-related, economy-crushing, heavy-handed restrictions.

The European Union, United Kingdom, and Israel have all banned air travel to southern Africa in response to the new variant. Biden’s ban is in lockstep with their moves. He said he did so after conferring with Dr. Fauci over it.
