A riot was declared in downtown Portland, Oregon by police on Friday night following the not guilty verdict of Kyle Rittenhouse who shot and killed two attackers and wounded a third during the Kenosha riots in 2020.

A protest turned violent, according to authorities, with rampant vandalism, fires started, and police being viciously attacked by radicals in the streets of Portland near the Multnomah County Justice Center. Roughly 200 protesters gathered to protest the Rittenhouse verdict.

Rioters threw objects at officers, stormed and damaged the Justice Center’s front gate, and smashed windows, KPTV of Oregon reported.

Chris Liedle, who is with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, remarked that a riot was declared after protesters began focusing on and “tampering with” a roll-up gate at the Justice Center. As many as 20 protesters descended upon the entrance of the jail and put large tree branches in the way to stop the gate from closing.

Deputies and the protesters clashed on the ramp, according to KOIN-TV. The “hostile” crowd threw “urine, alcoholic beverages, water bottles, and batteries,” Liedle claimed.

Protesters tore down fencing and construction signs to use as street barricades. They banged on doors and yelled anti-police chants. There were also trash fires and other debris set ablaze in the middle of the streets.

“Due to violent, destructive behavior by a significant part of the crowd, the gathering in downtown Portland is a RIOT. All participants are instructed to proceed away to the WEST,” the Portland Police Bureau tweeted.

A bullhorn informed the rioters that failing to disperse could result in their arrest, being pepper-sprayed, and having impact weapons used against them.

The rear window of a police vehicle was smashed in. A city print shop had its windows smashed and the Justice Center building was vandalized with graffiti that called for killing police officers because Rittenhouse was allowed to walk.

There was reportedly at least one arrest with five citations and 17 warnings handed out.

Earlier Friday, Portland police Chief Chuck Lovell announced that the bureau would consider asking other law enforcement agencies for help depending on the situation on the ground after the verdict. He said it “depends on what information we have and what we feel the level of threat is” regarding whether the National Guard would be called in, KOIN-TV reported.

Portland was not the only major city to see protests and unrest after the Rittenhouse verdict.

In Chicago, thieves hit a Neiman Marcus store on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and a GameStop on the South Side on Friday night, looting both stores as protesters took to the streets decrying the Rittenhouse acquittal.

WGN-TV in Chicago reported that police would not confirm the looting was related to the Rittenhouse protest but it appeared to be a crime of convenience. Kenosha is approximately 66 miles from Chicago.

Fifteen individuals targeted Neiman Marcus. They reportedly ran into the department store, grabbed items, and then fled the scene in three vehicles.

“We have to protest tonight to show these right-wingers, to show the system that we won’t back down,” demonstrator Shavvir Manjee proclaimed. “Because the precedent that they’re setting is that these armed vigilantes can show up to our protests, show up to where we’re making demands, and threaten us and intimidate us. And we’re here to say we won’t be intimidated.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot urged protesters to demonstrate peacefully Friday.

“Under our constitutional system, we must respect the jury’s decision,” Lightfoot announced in a statement following the verdict. She also asserted that Rittenhouse’s conduct was “reckless, dangerous, and showed an utter disregard for human life.”

“No one should ever take the law into their own hands, or attempt to make themselves the judge, jury, and executioner,” she said and then gave her condolences to the attackers’ families.

There were at least five arrests in New York City and damage caused by protesters in Queens Friday night, according to the NYPD.

Police tweeted a photo of vandalized vehicles in Queens. One car with handicap plates had “F**k you” graffitied on the back in black spray paint.

“The NYPD takes its responsibility to protect the 1st amendment rights of peaceful demonstrators seriously,” the tweet declared. “Just as important is the safety of NYers & the protection of property from people breaking the law in the name of protest. As seen tonight in Queens, they will be arrested.”

Queens Councilman Robert Holden told the New York Post that protestors raced through Crowley Park and were “jumping on cars and stealing American flags” on residential streets in Middle Village and in Maspeth.

He asserted that Mayor Bill de Blasio’s statement decrying the Rittenhouse verdict “added gasoline to the fire.”

He sent de Blasio a text that stated, “Thousands of families mind their own business are in danger tonight because of your reckless reaction to the trial verdict.”

Nearly 300 protesters besieged Brooklyn’s Barclays Center proclaiming that the not guilty verdict was a shameful racial double standard in the justice system.

Signs read “no justice in the capitalist courts” and “capitalism breeds racist terror.”

“Although Kyle Rittenhouse did not kill a black person. He was able to kill a white motherf***er and walk free,” one protester commented.

Protesters marched across the Brooklyn Bridge and into Lower Manhattan before breaking up and drifting away.

In Kenosha, a relatively small but aggressively vocal crowd gathered. One woman was arrested for scribbling “Judge Schroeder must go” on the courthouse walls and steps in chalk.

Chants of “F**k Kyle,” and “No justice, no peace,” were heard.
