Lawyer who promoted use of ‘violent resistance’ launches run for Congress in Michigan

Huwaida Arraf, a Michigan attorney who represented a Palestinian terrorist who killed two Jewish college students, has announced her bid for Michigan’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat running against Republican Rep. Lisa McClain.

Arraf has promoted violence against Israelis previously and is the co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), which is an anti-Israel group that was investigated by the FBI for possible ties to terrorists.

Her group organized the 2010 Gaza Strip flotilla that the Israeli military blocked. It was reportedly loaded up with weapons and military equipment for the terrorist group Hamas.

According to McClain, Arraf is cut from the same cloth as Democratic Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders II-VT).

“Huwaida Arraf is a Bernie Sanders-style socialist who does not share the views of Michigan’s 10th Congressional District,” McClain said in a statement, according to The Washington Free Beacon. “The last thing we need in Congress is another member of the Squad, and that’s exactly who she would align with if elected.”

Ron Weiser, who is the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, told the Free Beacon, “We don’t need more extremists in Congress.”

Arraf and fellow ISM co-founder Adam Shapiro wrote an article in 2002 for The New Republic promoting nonviolent as well as violent resistance against Israelis irrespective of their ties to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

“The Palestinian resistance must take on a variety of characteristics — both nonviolent and violent,” the article contends. “But most importantly it must develop a strategy involving both aspects.”

“No other successful nonviolent movement was able to achieve what it did without a concurrent violent movement — in India, militants attacked British outposts and interests while Gandhi conducted his campaign, while the Black Panther Movement and its earlier incarnations existed side-by-side with the Civil Rights Movement in the United States,” the ISM co-founders wrote.

“Violent resistance is when an armed Palestinian fighter shoots an Israeli who is oppressing him,” they asserted while threatening “any Israeli deemed to be ‘oppressing’ a Palestinian.”

“Yes, people will get killed and injured,” she wrote in 2002, but these deaths are “no less noble than carrying out a suicide operation.”

The Anti-defamation League (ADL) identified ISM in 2010 as one of the top 10 anti-Israel organizations in the nation. The ADL also blasted ISM in 2014 for the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens. ISM claimed the teens were “missing” and dismissed then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blaming Hamas for the brutal killings.

Arraf was also part of the legal team for Palestinian terrorist Rasmea Odeh, who planned a 1969 Jerusalem terrorist attack that killed two and injured several others. Odeh was released in a 1980 prisoner exchange and then relocated to the United States, where she was granted citizenship after she lied about her past on immigration forms, according to the Free Beacon. Documents show that Arraf joined Odeh’s legal team in July of 2016, as she fought to maintain citizenship. Odeh was eventually deported in 2017 by the Trump administration.

The Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue is raising money for Arraf.

“As the daughter of working-class immigrants and now a mom of two young kids myself, I know the daily challenges facing working people all too well,” Assaf asserted in a press release. “Michiganders today are working as hard as ever and can’t make ends meet as stagnant wages fail to keep up with the rising price of gas, groceries, housing, daycare, and healthcare.”

“I’m running for Congress because every Michigan family wants and deserves the same things: good-paying jobs, quality schools, safe neighborhoods, resilient infrastructure, clean air and water, and healthy communities,” she added. “We deserve better than Washington politicians who care more about their corporate donors’ checks than they do Michiganders’ paychecks.”

“I have been beaten, shot at, imprisoned and hijacked at sea standing up to injustice on the global stage,” Arraf said in a tweet launching her campaign. “I’m not afraid of a fight. Today, I’m announcing my campaign for Congress in Michigan’s 10th District.”
