Hawk Newsome, who is the leader of Black Lives Matter in New York, met with incoming Mayor Eric Adams to discuss policing and then threatened him with “riots,” “fire,” and “bloodshed” if he reinstates NYPD anti-crime units.

The police units were in place prior to Mayor De Blasio being elected. He did away with them after coming into office. Newsome is comparing the units to the Nazi Gestapo.

Adams is a former police captain who may be a liberal but is allegedly aligns with conservatives when it comes to the NYPD. He met with Newsome on Wednesday at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall, according to the New York Daily News. It was not a friendly meeting and devolved into a shouting match.

“If he thinks that they’re going to go back to the old ways of policing, then we are going to take to the streets again. There will be riots, there will be fire and there will be bloodshed because we believe in defending our people,” Newsome warned. He sounded as if the group was getting ready to go to war, stating they pray for peace but prepare “for the worst.”

“To ignore that history and say you’re bringing it back means that he’s tone-deaf,” Newsome told The New York Post in a phone interview.

“What he is not discussing is how the NYPD anti-crime and plainclothes unit has been responsible for some of the most famous police brutality cases in American history. Let us not forget who killed Eric Garner, Sean Bell, and Amadou Diallo,” Newsome said. “Police believe we have a pro-cop mayor and that can lead to widespread abuse.”

Chivona Newsome, who is the co-founder of the group and Hawk’s sister, told the New York Daily News, “We will shut down City Hall, and we will give him hell and make it a nightmare.”

Adams gained notoriety for speaking critically about the department he served in and noting that he experienced police brutality when he was 15. He claims to have been beaten by police officers when he was busted for trespassing.

However, Adams has never supported the “defund the police” movement and is proud of his time in the department. He contends he’s progressive but supports the police and businesses.

As Adams campaigned he promised to bring back a “reinvented” version of the anti-crime unit that would conduct firearm busts, as well as a crackdown on violent crime and hard drugs.

Adams found common ground with Black Lives Matter on plans to fight poverty in the black community. But the former NYPD captain also was adamant about reinstating a revamped version of the undercover anti-crime unit that was disbanded at the height of widespread police protests last year in June of 2020. The units employed approximately 600 plainclothes officers.

Newsome asserted that he was troubled that Adams “didn’t offer a comment on police reform … he wouldn’t offer us anything concrete” during their confab.

“We will be at his front door, we will be at Gracie Mansion, we will be in the streets if he allows these police to abuse us,” he proclaimed. “I am not threatening anyone. I am just saying that it’s a natural response to aggressive oppression, people will react.”

Adams told the New York Post that there is “no reason we cannot have both safe streets and racial justice in our city.”

“If black lives truly matter, then we must address violence in our communities while we address bias in policing. Yelling and not listening gets us nowhere,” the new mayor commented.
