DeSantis offers ‘perfect’ reply to reporter’s inquiry about ‘Brandon administration’ quip being ‘proper’

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent a crowd into a frenzy last week when he mischievously referred to the Biden administration as the Brandon administration while announcing the formation of a statewide office to investigate and prosecute election-related crimes.

“When you look at the Biden administration….the Brandon administration in terms of what they’re doing…” the highly popular governor said, prompting the room to break out into a raucous recitation of the chant, “Let’s Go, Brandon!” The chant is intended as G-rated criticism of President Joe Biden, being a play off of an NBC Sports reporter interpreting a NASCAR crowd chanting “F**k Joe Biden” as support for driver Brandon Brown, who had just won a race. The reporter erroneously said they were chanting, “Let’s go, Brandon!”

In an interview Monday with WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach after announcing his 2022 re-election bid, DeSantis was asked by anchor Jay O’Brien if that reference was “proper” and the Republican offered what was deemed online as the “perfect” response, showing why so many on the right see him as a terrific choice to run for president in 2024.

“Do you feel that is the proper level of exchange between a governor and a president?” O’Brien asked.

“Let me ask you how he’s treated us,” DeSantis said, with somewhat of a smile. “Look, I think it’s a joke. But honestly one of the reasons that has taken off is because a lot of your folks in the national media, they get very sensitive to it.”

After briefly detailing how the chant originated, he added, “I think the reason it’s caught on because it needles the national media a little bit…Look, they’ve become very partisan. They were very much against [Donald] Trump, they’re very much ahead of Biden. So I think we view it as fun.”

O’Brien pressed to say, “But it’s a swear about the president.”

“Here’s what I would say, was there hand-wringing about this about the stuff said about Trump for four years? Nah, there wasn’t,” the GOP governor replied. “So, I think it was more meant in fun but I do think that we have substantive differences. I think he has done a lot to attack Florida, but what I would say is let’s focus on inflation, let’s focus on getting gas prices down, let’s focus on the border, which has been a total disaster and it is affecting Florida.”

DeSantis is often compared to former President Donald Trump because he does not back down to a biased media that guns for him on a daily basis. Like the former president, DeSantis gives as good as he gets, and does it in a more refined manner. He is also correct that the liberal media had little problem with the all-out assault on Trump for four-plus years, with many in the industry participating in the barrage.

The interview opened with a question about committing to serving all four years as governor once reelected and DeSantis laughed, before stressing, I’m running for governor, I’m not running for any other office.”

“Literally I get asked that everywhere I go,” he said, when asked why the laughter. “Literally I’ve done nothing and people kind of impose speculation on me.”
