Devilish reference to ‘Brandon administration’ by DeSantis drives crowd to break out in now-famous chant

Gov. Ron DeSantis sent a crowd into a frenzy with an increasingly popular chant meant as a criticism of President Joe Biden on Wednesday after announcing the formation of a new statewide office to investigate and prosecute election-related crimes.

“When you look at the Biden administration….the Brandon administration in terms of what they’re doing…” the GOP governor said, as the crowd broke into a raucous recitation of the chant, “Let’s Go, Brandon!”

“The Governor went on to explain the background of that chant to those who didn’t know, and adds, ‘they said much worse about Trump,'” wrote Kyle Lamb, a communications specialist in DeSantis’ office, on Twitter.

The phrase comes from an NBC Sports reporter’s interview with NASCAR’s Brandon Brown after he won a race earlier this year at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway. The crowd nearby was chanting “F**k Joe Biden!” which itself has become popular at sporting events and other venues, but the reporter appeared to mistake the chant for “Let’s go, Brandon!” The latter phrase is now often used to push back on the president without employing the more vulgar version.

DeSantis’ rowdy presser and creation of the new election integrity office come as Republicans managed to win key victories in elections around the country, perhaps none more notable than the governorship and lieutenant governorship in Virginia.

There, GOP candidate, businessman, and first-time politician Glenn Youngkin beat a former Virginia governor and longtime Democratic political operative, Terry McAuliffe, by about two points though most analysts had the tight race going for the ex-governor.

Also, Winsome Sears made history by becoming the first black Republican to win the lieutenant governor’s race in the state. Born in Jamaica, she is also the first naturalized citizen and the first black female veteran to win the office.

Christina Pushaw, a spokeswoman for DeSantis, noted the victories on Twitter, writing:  “Dear Virginia, Welcome to the Resistance! Love, Florida.”

DeSantis has been a long-time critic of the Democratic agenda under President Joe Biden, which many political analysts say led to the many Republican victories in Virginia, New York, Texas, Colorado, and elsewhere in both state and local races.

Last week, DeSantis said “I’m very, very concerned about reports” regarding the Biden administration’s negotiations to pay up to $450,000 to illegal migrants to settle lawsuits.

“I mean, you think about it, Americans are getting more in their gas bills, they’re getting more in their grocery bills. You’ve had all kinds of really bad policies throughout our country, that has limited freedom. And you’re going to turn around for that, and you’re going to do $475,000 for an individual that came illegally to this country?” he said during a press conference.

“I’ve seen a lot in my day. I’ve seen a lot that’s happened over the last nine or 10 months that I didn’t think I’d ever see, but this takes the cake,” DeSantis added. “If that is done, that is going to be a slap in the face to every hard-working American who works hard and plays by the rules and it will especially be a slap in the face to people that have immigrated legally to this country.

“That should not be allowed to stand. It’s wrong. And whatever we can do in Florida to fight back against it, we will do,” he vowed.
