California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom sent out a caustic, now-deleted tweet on Sunday telling people to “stop hating” and “get a life” after her husband abruptly disappeared from public view last month to take care of “family obligations.”

Governor Newsom was a no-show at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland after receiving his COVID booster shot on Oct. 27.

A political reporter from the Sacramento Bee named Sophia Bollag first reported on the tweet. She posted on Twitter that Newsom’s office had refused to clarify exactly what he meant by “family obligations” when bowing out of the summit.

“It’s funny how certain folks can’t handle truth,” Siebel Newsom angrily tweeted, according to a screenshot taken of the message. “When someone cancels something, maybe they’re just in the office working; maybe in their free time they’re at home with their family, at their kids’ sports matches, or dining out with their wife. Please stop hating and get a life.”

The Associated Press is reporting that Newsom did not respond to questions on Friday about his whereabouts. He has also not responded to Fox News over the issue.

Initially, the governor’s office announced on Oct. 29 that he would attend the climate summit virtually. That never happened. California’s Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis led the delegation in his place.

There seem to be no major catastrophes or pressing issues currently that would keep the governor from his duties.

“I don’t know where Gavin Newsom is and won’t speculate,” tweeted Kevin Kiley, who is a Republican assemblyman from the state. “But it’s pretty strange for the governor to disappear for 11 days without explanation.”

The governor received his booster shot in public, flexing for the cameras, and urged everyone to get theirs as well. Since that time he has only been seen in prerecorded video appearances.

Newsom did post a Halloween photo with his family on Instagram. It appeared that the family was having fun and everything was normal.

“The governor has been working from the Capitol this week,” a spokeswoman for Newsom told the Daily Mail in an interview on Saturday. His office dismissed any connection between missing the climate summit and Newsom’s booster shot as “misinformation.”

Newsom’s Twitter account was inactive from October 28 until Tuesday. He tweeted out his support for Governors Phil Murphy of New Jersey and Terry McAuliffe of Virginia during the election last week. His account was more active later in the week with tweets on climate change, vaccinations for children, and vaccine mandates for large companies. Newsom did not address any other reasons for his absence.

He released some prerecorded remarks to a transit conference earlier in the week, and a pre-recorded statement on Friday commemorating Diwali, the festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists.

Democratic state Sen. Bob Hertzberg remarked that he suspected Newsom was very disappointed that he was unable to attend the climate conference.

“He loves this issue, he cares about it a lot,” Hertzberg noted according to the Daily Mail. “It’s a big deal to him, and I’m sure he desperately wanted to go.”

Newsom spokesperson Erin Mellon announced that Newsom will appear virtually at the U.N. climate conference, which ends on November 12.

“The Governor will participate in a couple events next week focused on global efforts to advance zero-emission vehicles and to move beyond oil,” she stated on Thursday.
